Sega has trademarked the name Sonic Frontiers, which seems likely to be the name of the series’ next big release in 2022.

The newest game was revealed with a CG trailer where the blue blur dashed his way through a forest all the way back in May, but the Japanese gaming company has been tight-lipped about what the new game actually is, or how it will even play.

A combination of a press release with an accidentally released title (“Sonic Rangers”) and an online leak implied that the game would take heavy inspiration from Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild in regards to game design. Sonic Frontiers, if that is the final title, would seem to imply the same feelings of open air exploration.

What was the Sonic Frontiers 4chan leak?

On October 17, 2021 there was a 4chan poster that also claimed they had played the title, and that it had had its name changed to Sonic Frontiers. This poster reiterated that the game would be a mix of Breath of the Wild and Sonic Generations, as seen in the image below. They also said that the game is good, which is exciting!

Will 2022 be a big year for Sonic the Hedgehog?

Sonic Prime Netflix

2022 looks to be a big year for the way-past-cool hedgehog, with the arrival of Sonic Frontiers making up only one part of a new massive transmedia expansion move for the biggest Sega franchise.

Alongside Sonic Frontiers we expect to see a new animated Netflix show called Sonic Prime, a remastered collection of the Mega Drive hits that made the series popular called Sonic Origins, the continuation of IDW’s popular Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series, and a new feature film called Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that is currently set to arrive on April 8, 2022.

Are you excited about an open world 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game? Do you just want to play the nostalgic Mega Drive classics and then watch the film? Are you more of a Super Mario fan? Let us know in the comments section below.
