During the Tokyo Game Show, developer Team Ninja revealed that Souls-like feudal Japanese action-RPG, Nioh 2, will release sometime in early 2020. In addition, the studio responsible for the classic Ninja Gaiden franchise revealed an open beta.
Nioh 2 Open Beta
The open beta runs from November 1st to November 10th via the PlayStation Store and will allow players to sample a brand new stage alongside squaring up to an as yet unseen demonic beast to test their fighting skills in earnest.
It follows on from late May’s alpha test, which saw 50,000 players jump in to provide useful feedback to improve the game. November’s event should shed some light on what Team Ninja has changed and improved in the interim.
Nioh 2 Gameplay
Nioh 2 is set to follow in the footsteps of the original Nioh, which reasserted Team Ninja's as a bonafide studio after a development cycle that lasted well over a decade.
In Nioh 2, players return to the treacherous lands of Sengoku era Japan, but this time around taking the form of a half-Yokai and half-human protagonist rather than the Irish sailor William from the original.
Much of the tight Ninja Gaiden-inspired combat returns alongside the Dark Souls level difficulty as do the ever more terrifying demonic Yokai alongside a slew of warlords and bandits to push the narrative forward.
Nioh 2 Trailers
Team Ninja has been kind enough to drop multiple trailers at the Tokyo Game Show, which showcase Nioh 2 in all its glory. Bleak misty settings, Japanese folklore-inspired enemies, and the precision mechanics are all on show.
It's all looking mighty enticing and should nicely fill the void left by this year's phenomenal Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which also tackled the subject matter of feudal Japan and myriad supernatural elements in the same way as Nioh 2.
