Carl Pei’s Nothing Phone 1 graced us in July last year. It was undoubtedly one of the most hyped smartphones due to Carl’s master marketing strategy, and the smartphone was somewhat different from your conventional Android smartphones. The OnePlus co-founder is definitely on to a winner after moving on and founding the Nothing brand.

The result was a quirky, transparent case smartphone with glyph lights on its back. On the software front, the smartphone’s Nothing OS didn’t provide much new. It was your run-of-the-mill Android OS. After the release, the Nothing Phone 1 received somewhat mixed responses, but they were mostly positive.

So, this year. We welcome the successor, the Nothing Phone 2. Carl Pei confirmed the device’s existence during the MWC 2023, and here’s what we know about the new Nothing smartphone.

Nothing Phone 2 release date

*Update* Nothing Phone 2 has officially been launched on July 11, 2023. Additionally, pre-orders went live on the same day. This has been confirmed officially by nothing in this tweet. The launch took place at 4PM BST on that date. Closely following that announcement, CEO Carl Pei announced that they will be bringing Nothing OS 2.0 to Phone 1 users too by the end of August.

When is the phone is available beyond the pre-order stage though? Nothing are running their Nothing Drops campaign, which sees the phone available to buy in-person starting July 13 in London and New York (full details here). As for when the device is fully available worldwide, this is expected to be starting around the following week, on July 17 or 18.

Nothing Phone 2 has been officially locked in for a Summer 2023 release date. This news comes courtesy of the Nothing Twitter account, with a short teaser and the option to sign-up for further updates. It’s created a ton of buzz, even for such a small glimpse. At the MWC 2023, Carl confirmed that Nothing Phone 2 is coming this year; however, Nothing’s founder didn’t clarify when exactly. The Phone 1 had a summer release, specifically in July 2022. So, we expected the launch of Phone 2 around the same time, even prior to the announcement. A follow-up interview with Forbes revealed that the phone is coming in July 2023, with a global release.

However, the launch could be sooner than expected as 91Mobiles has reportedly spotted what looks like the Nothing Phone (2) on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification website. It only happens if the launch date is imminent. Now that we also know the Phone 2 is coming in Summer yet again, perhaps this revelation means even earlier in July than you may think.

Early leaks already suggested a few pieces of information about the Nothing Phone 2. Nothing’s second smartphone is expected to have a 120 Hz adaptive AMOLED screen with a 4,700 mAh battery, which is a considerable upgrade compared to the older model. The base variant will have 256GB of storage and a Snapdragon 8 series chipset. A Qualcomm executive tweeted that the phone would be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. It was an accidental reveal, and the tweet has since been deleted. Since then though, CEO Carl Pei went on to confirm the inclusion of the chipset.

While the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 isn’t the latest and greatest from Qualcomm, it is still a considerable upgrade from the Snapdragon 778+ that powered the original Nothing Phone. As well as upgrades, we expect to see design features such as the Glyph Interface return. These are the lights on the back of the phone which can be synced to flash patterns to indicate information such as charging progress or even who’s calling you – plenty of customization here.

Around a month prior to release, GSMArena have reported on confirmed specs such as the SoC, battery, and screen size. The screen size has been boosted to match flagships such as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. To add to that, Nothing promise three years of Android updates and four years of security updates for their new. An early render found on GSMArena also shows what the Nothing Phone 2 could look like. Now that the device is live, there is no need to speculate about this though.

Nothing Phone 2 battery life

Battery life is an aspect of phone usage which is painfully obvious if it’s lacking. The Phone 1 was lacking a little bit with it’s 4500 mAh battery, but now it’s jumping up to 4,700. Another important aspect is the software on board. Nothing OS is seeing a massive upgrade according early interviews with the company. Especially since the performance was not as optimized as they would like.

There’s a much bigger team this around, close to 100 people on software alone according to Carl Pei. This means better efficiency and less stress on the battery life. Pair that with the improved performance of the confirmed Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, and you can see why the battery life looks promising.

Nothing Phone 2 camera

We now know all there is to know about the Nothing Phone 2 camera, following the launch. It indeed uses the familiar double-camera setup for rear of the device, with main 50MP and ultrawide 50MP cameras. The former uses a Sony IMX890 sensor, and the latter a Samsung JN1 sensor. There is also the front selfie camera which is 32MP with a Sony IMX615 sensor.

Another thing here is the jump to Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, which can capture 4,000 time more camera data than the Phone 1. That means Nothing Phone 2 will be capable of Raw HDR and 4K 60fps recordings. This comes straight from the best source, the ever-active Nothing CEO.

Nothing Phone 2 price info

The Phone 1 was a more budget smartphone with a below $500 price tag. However, with the Phone 2, we expected a price bump, due to overall improvements. The price was a closely kept secret until the launch date, but now we know all about it. There are three different variants with a range of prices to consider:

  • 8GB RAM / 128GB storage: $599 / £579
  • 12GB RAM / 256GB storage: $699 / £629
  • 12GB RAM / 512GB storage: $799 / £699

Is Nothing Phone 2 more expensive than Nothing Phone 1?

Due to the overall improvements we expect to see, this will result in an increase in the price tag. So yes, we do expect the Nothing Phone 2 to be a little pricier than the original. This turned out to be the case, as you can see in the prices above – compared to the Nothing Phone 1 which instead started at £399, or $299 for the stripped-down beta US version.

Nothing Phone 2 design

As with the Nothing Phone 1, the most buzz around this device is around the design itself. The Nothing Phone 1 was certainly unique, and arguably the main draw for those looking for an alternative to the commonplace Samsungs and iPhones on the market.

That being said, there is still little to go on at this stage, but we’re predicting that the Nothing Phone 2 will likely double down on what made the original stand out. We’d expect some changes to the signature lighting, and perhaps even a new color-way this time around. The latest interviews suggest that Phone 2 will be heading towards an even more bold transparent design, with Carl Pei mentioning that they’ve observed a few other, more established brands, taking on the transparent look in their own devices. It’s become a trend.

Typically, phone designs come in a couple of months before release, and since the Nothing Phone 1 was released in July 2022, we could catch a first ‘teaser’ sometime soon.

Nothing Phone 2 vs Nothing Phone 1 features

*Previous rumors and leaks*

Now we have seen some interesting rumors in regards to the specs of the Nothing Phone 2, we can speculate how much it will improve upon the original. The Nothing Phone 2 aims to be a more premium device, so we can of course expect to see some improvements to the specifications and features.

The Nothing Phone 1 had two 50MP main & ultrawide cameras, which weren’t too bad. An upgrade specs here is possible, but what about features and the software side of things? Well, Carl Pei (CEO of Nothing, literally) has mentioned that there will be a focus on software improvements. This could spell additional features and optimization for the camera on the Nothing Phone 2. We’ve seen a similar development from Google with their line of Pixel phones too.

The rumored specs show a sizeable improvement to the Nothing Phone 1 when it comes to battery life, but there are varying reports on what will end up looking like exactly, but we do expect an improvement at the very least. Again, software updates seem to be helping out here and could be another thing to focus on moving forward.

How many products does Nothing have in its portfolio?

Prior to Nothing Phone 2, Nothing had 4 products in its portfolio. The company first launched Nothing Ear 1. After that, the company launched the Phone 1, followed by the Nothing Ear Stick in 2022. The company’s latest product prior to the Phone 2 is the Nothing Ear 2, the successor of Ear 1, released in March 2023. Now the Nothing Phone 2 is launched, here’s their current line-up:

  • Ear 1
  • Ear (stick)
  • Ear (2)
  • Phone (1)
  • Phone (2)

Is there a new Nothing Phone?

Yes, the new Nothing Phone – Phone (2) is fully confirmed and has arrived in July 2023. There have been a few leaks here and there, but Nothing has still kept a lot behind closed doors so close to the launch. This new Nothing Phone is arriving just one year after it’s predecessor, so this could be trend we’ll see with their phones in the future as well.

This time round, Nothing are even boasting their efforts regarding the eco-friendly design and carbon footprint – something they’ve been tweeting about. The carbon footprint is reported as just 53.45kg. On top of that, they’ve also discussed their advancements in Nothing OS 2.0, which is slated to be a big step forward, as reported by XDA.
