Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, has shared his thoughts on the newly formed Intel-AMD “x86 Alliance,” calling it a necessary step to keep the x86 architecture alive.

Intel, AMD, and others recently collaborated on a joint venture to form an x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group that aims to progress the future of the architecture and ensure cross-compatibility between platforms. Despite being vigorous competitors, Intel and AMD have shared the stage to ensure that the x86 extends to incredible success for decades to come. Even tech giants like NVIDIA are showing support for this alliance, despite initial concerns that it could impact their influence in the AI market.

Nvidia believes that the x86 architecture was falling behind due to the industry’s competitive race, and they are glad that companies out there are willing to make sure that x86 remains x86. Although Nvidia now has to face competition in the AI market from multiple companies working together, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, is still supportive and on board with what the x86 alliance stands for.

We support x86. X86 is very important to us. We support it for PCs, workstations, data centers. And so the fact that the architecture was fragmenting isn’t good for the industry. So I love what they’re doing. Pulling it together and making sure that x86 remains x86. Otherwise, it’s not x86 anymore so I think it’s really terrific what they’re doing.

Intel and AMD CEOs share the stage for the very first time

The “x86 Alliance” announcement came shortly before Lenovo’s Tech World 2024 event, where we saw the first-ever sample of the Panther Lake processor. During that time, Intel’s CEO Pat Gelsinger and AMD’s CEO Lisa Su stepped onto the stage together for the very first time to share their plans for the evolution of the x86 architecture. Pat Gelsinger addressed this rivalry-turned-partnership and said that:

You all have a front row seat to maybe the first partnership with Intel and AMD,” Gelsinger told the crowd. “Some have said ‘Is the x86 done?’ I’ll tell you rumors of its death are severely exaggerated. We are alive and well and the x86 is thriving. … Pat and Lisa [Su,chair and CEO of AMD] agree on something. Who’d have thunk it.

The x86 Alliance comes at a time when the PC market is facing the dominance of ARM architecture. Intel’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger, believes that we are currently experiencing “one of the most significant shifts in the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades – with new levels of customization, compatibility, and scalability needed to meet current and future customer needs.”
