We’re going to have to wait until the full reviews come out to really assess the gaming performance offered by the top-end Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 GPU releasing later today, but Nvidia has, in perhaps an effort to temper expectations, confirmed that they are anticipating a roughly 10-15% improvement in performance compared to their now sold out RTX 3080.

In a post on their blog, ahead of the much-anticipated release of the RTX 3090 today, Nvidia has explained that players should expect a roughly 10-15% performance improvement with 4K gaming on an RTX 3090 compared to an RTX 3080.

“For gamers pushing the limits, the GeForce RTX 3090 is also the first GPU that lets you connect, play, capture, and watch in 8K HDR. That’s an insane 4x the pixels of 4K and 16x the pixels of 1080p.

For 4K gaming, the GeForce RTX 3090 is about 10-15% faster on average than the GeForce RTX 3080, and up to 50% faster than the TITAN RTX.”

The exact performance will vary between different games, which settings are being used, and what other hardware the card is being used in conjunction with. We’ll be sure to have some in-depth benchmarks posted as soon as we can get our hands on these cards.

They have also gone on to prepare people for similar stock issues that have plagued the release of the RTX 3080,

“Since we built GeForce RTX 3090 for a unique group of users, like the TITAN RTX before it, we want to apologise upfront that this will be in limited supply on launch day. We know this is frustrating, and we’re working with our partners to increase the supply in the weeks to come.”

Nvidia’s top-end cards are not primarily targeting gaming users, where the RTX 3090 is built for use in areas like visual effects, game development, and use in other professional contexts. They do also offer fantastic game performance for people who want the best no matter the price.

If you are planning to pick up an RTX 3090, and are worried about navigating the stock shortages, we’re tracking all the places you can buy an RTX 3090 over on this page.
