The PS5 is one of the most successful consoles of all time, with demand never appearing to slow down. With that in mind, we though it would be a great idea to take a look at any upcoming PS5 Pro release date and other PS5 Pro news.

While many PlayStation fans assumed a mid-generation upgrade was on the cards, there was still a lot of uncertainty around what that upgrade would look like, or if it would even happen. Some people may even be looking forward to the PS6 already. Well, the good news is potentially here, maybe. Just in time to enjoy the best PS5 games.

According to TCL, Sony and Microsoft are going to unveil the new consoles sometime in 2024, or 2024 at the very latest. PPE was at the press conference where TCL, a TV manufacturer, presented its ideas in preparation for the next generation of consoles. Of course, Gen 9.5 is a mid-gen upgrade, something we are accustomed to with each launch, and this leak originally courtesy of Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson gives fire to the already circling rumors around what is coming next.

Potential PS5 Pro release window

While the debate over whether or not we will see a mid-generation update this time around rages on, this presentation gives us hope.

Initial predictions, along with the TCL presentation slide put the PS5 Pro release window at late 2023 to early 2024. This would be similar to the timeframe we saw between the PS4 and PS4 Pro release dates at around 3 years. There is still much to be confirmed though, so some reports are less enthusiastic and place the PS5 Pro release date closer to late in 2024. As things stand right now, the latter prediction is looking more likely. One thing we do know right now is that the PS5 Pro is certainly in development. Insider Gaming reports reports that the PS5 Pro is confirmed, and even a refreshed PS5 with detachable disc drive will be arriving this year before the Pro.

Mid-gen upgrades are nothing new, however, with the PS4 for example, 4K gaming became accessible, therefore an upgrade made a lot of sense to bridge the gap with the current-gen of consoles. For the PS5 Pro, many believed the next step was obviously 8K and it appears it could be a correct call. Hopefully, we get to see higher refresh rates with the Pro but until Sony makes an announcement, it is all still speculation.

PS5 Pro price prediction

The price of the PS5 Pro is another unknown but looking back we saw the PS4 Pro launch at $399. With the rumored upgrades we can only speculate the price of the Pro but you can safely assume it will cost more than the original disc version.

This could potentially put the PS5 Pro at around $600-$700. Especially if Sony really chooses to push the hardware to it’s limits and create a truly ‘Pro’ version of the PlayStation 5.

PS5 Pro leaked specs – what upgrades are rumored?

The latest on the PS5 Pro comes in the form of some leaks, which our good friends at PCGuide have reported on. The Pro is rumored to have faster memory speeds, up to 576 GB/s compared to the original’s 448 GB/s. Furthermore, audio is said to be improved thanks to the ACV (its audio processor) running at a higher clock speed, giving the ACM library a 35% performance increase.

The processor will also have a High CPU Frequency Mode which can boost performance by 10%, which may incur underclocking for the GPU. However, there is supposedly 45% faster graphics performance and two-to-three times better ray tracing. This is backed up by Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling which Insider Gaming say could target up to 8K 60 FPS or better unlock the potential of 4K 120Hz on your HDMI 2.1 monitor (or TV).

We expect most areas of the PS5 Pro to surpass the original, otherwise, the potential price simply wouldn’t be worth it. CNET speculated that the processor could see a boost, possibly utilizing an AMD Zen 4 and RDNA 3 CPU/GPU partnership. This extra power could bring about the performance improvements we heard YouTuber RedGamingTech speculate, with up to two and a half times boost in ray tracing titles.

Ideally, this would also mean we could see upscaled 4K at 120 FPS, native 4K at 60 FPS with solid ray-tracing effects, and a bolster in storage space. Additionally, with the PSVR 2 now here, some extra horsepower wouldn’t go amiss as the PSVR 2 specs are pretty demanding so far.

There could be upgrades to ray tracing also on board. In particular, this tweet reveals that a patent filed by Mark Cerny shows plans for upgrades to the PS5’s ray tracing hardware, likely to come in the form of the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Will PS5 Pro support 8K?

A new PS5 and Xbox Series X that are capable of 8K seems a little ahead of their time but TCL expects 8K capable devices could be unveiled, with the RX 7700XT GPU shown on the presentation slide.

Will the masses be able to take advantage of 8K? The cost of an 8K TV or 8K monitor is quite high, so a mid-gen upgrade in 2024 sounds pretty bold.

TCL mentioned that devices would be able to provide 60-120 FPS in 4K and output at 8K, which could all depend on what AMD’s FSR 2.0 upscaling brings to the table. This would make the PS5 vs PC question much more interesting.

PS5 Pro design

Will Sony keep the PS5 design for the Pro version? Could the Pro be a more powerful PS5 Slim model? Only time will tell. We can still speculate on what we expect to see though. The original release of the PS5 was impressive. The design was unique and quite a jump up from what we saw in the previous generation. It’s new black and white color scheme stood out from the crowd. Since the PS5 can be stood up or laid on it’s side, there’s no reason the Pro would forgo this aspect.

Based on the PS4 Pro, it’s expected that the PS5 Pro will follow suit and be a little bit bulkier to accommodate upgrades to the system. Especially if a slim version is on it’s way to contrast. Insider Gaming reported that a PS5 with a detachable disk drive is on the way, which sounds close to a slim variety.

Will there be a PS5 Pro?

While we wait for an official announcement from Sony, some of you may be wondering if there will be a PlayStation 5 Pro at all. Well, it’s highly expected – and we don’t see why Sony would change the formula right now. Furthermore, a GamesIndustry.biz interview with Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed the he expects to see a PS5 Pro revealed for the current generation. He adds that the previous generation refresh didn’t affect their business too much, but it gave consumers a more powerful console with better graphics performance & more to enjoy before we move on to something like the PS6 in the future.

Would the PS5 Pro release be worth the upgrade?

If the rumors surrounding the PS5 Pro turn out true and the performance boost is more than double in ray-tracing, then yes. If the console is the top-end of let’s say, $700, it will offer unrivaled performance for the price. No gaming PC or alternative could match that value for money.

This all depends on your needs, as the current PS5 ticks a lot of boxes, including 4K gaming.

If you are someone who always wants the very best, plus are lucky enough to be able to afford an 8K TV/ monitor, the Pro becomes a very attractive mid-gen upgrade. For the majority who already own a PS5, the speculated upgrade probably isn’t worth it.

The PS5 is one of the most successful consoles of all time, wiping the floor with the Xbox Series X despite constant stock shortages. The demand for the PS5 doesn’t appear to be slowing down and a potential PS5 Pro release date could see that interest spike. For gaming in 4K, there are no options better than the PS5 but if the rumors surrounding the PS5 Pro are true, the Pro variant would be on everyone’s wishlist.

Everything PS5 Pro-related is just rumored at this point but looking at previous generations, the upgrade and speculated launch date feels logical. Whether the rumors are true or not, this is an exciting concept, with the PS5 possibly coming with greater 4K upscaling ability.

Before a mid-gen upgrade Pro variant, we usually see a ‘PS5 Slim’ model. The PS4 Pro was a successful mid-gen upgrade, however, the demand was nothing like it is has been for the PS5.

VR and 8K gaming could take the PS5 Pro into the next generation

Virtual reality’s popularity is heating up and it makes a lot of sense that the next iteration of PlayStation will feature hardware improvements for VR.

Sony’s PSVR 2 landed way before any new console is even teased but if Sony is going to compete with the big VR players, they are going to need a powerful console capable of much more.

With 8K gaming clearly on the horizon for many platforms, we may see Sony try and upgrade with the latest CPU and GPU hardware coming for Q4 this year.

PS4 Pro release date

The PS4 Pro launched on November 10th, 2016, which was a few days over exactly three years from the original. This amount of time gives the developers a chance to boost performance and create something that would be worth an upgrade.

By the time of the speculated PS5 Pro release date will stock shortages and global issues be over? We don’t know but things are heating up and will Microsoft respond with their own mid-gen release?

Until an official announcement, we won’t know if a PS5 Pro is actually coming to shelves. Our eyes and ears are peeled. The PS4 Pro launched offering gamers 4K gaming, so will the PS5 Pro possibly offer 8K?

This is the question on everyone’s lips but how useful a PS5 capable of 8K gaming would be is another entirely. Would there be any games to support this? Would players bother if they couldn’t afford an 8K TV? Regardless, it’s incredible to see how far the console has come.
