We’ve been enjoying the PS5 for a few years now, so it’s about time we checked out some PS6 release date speculation and predictions. There are a few interesting developments to talk about following the reveal of leaked documents. We are of course some time away from getting our hands on a PlayStation 6, but it’s nice to arrive nice and early to the rumors to see if we can find anything credible.

So, with that being said, there are already some rumors and potential leaks out there to investigate. The PlayStation 6 release date might have been revealed already, according to official files. We dig deep into that and more to come to a conclusion.

Previous PlayStation release dates

We can figure out if there’s any emerging pattern for PlayStation releases by looking to the past for just a moment. Considering that there are some differences in exact release dates, the list below will reflect the North American release dates for simplicity.

  • PS: September 9th, 1995
  • PS One: September 19th, 2000
  • PS2: October 26th, 2000
  • PS2 Slim: November 2004
  • PS3: November 17th, 2006
  • PS3 Slim: September 1st, 2009
  • PS3 Super Slim: September 25th, 2012
  • PS4: November 15th, 2013
  • PS4 Slim: September 15th, 2016
  • PS4 Pro: November 10th, 2016
  • PS5: November 12th, 2020

With the gap between new console generations being around 7 years for the previous two generations, you may expect something similar for the PS6 release date.

We’re still expected to get the PS5 Pro or PS5 Slim before we reach the PlayStation 6 though of course. We’re on track for that to drop soon if the PS4’s life cycle is anything to go by.

PS6 release speculation

Now for our PS6 release date prediction. Right now, there are no plans for the PS6 to release before 2027. That news comes courtesy of a leaked official Sony document.

The document alludes to the fact Microsoft offered to continue releasing Activision games on PlayStation only until 2027, which would mean it’s lost access to the Call of Duty franchise “by the time SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) launched the next generation of it’s PlayStation console”. So, that’s the latest we know for the PS6 release date. A 2028 release would mean that the PS5 had a life-cycle one year longer than that of the PS4.

PS6 price speculation

With still a long way to go before we reach the PlayStation 6, it’s hard to make a prediction on the price. A lot can change in a few years in the tech industry. There are currently no specs to go off, but we can take a look at how previous generations fared. Maybe we can spot a natural progression of the price tag on their respective launches.

  • PS3: $499.99 (20GB) / $599.99 (60GB)
  • PS4: $399.99
  • PS5: $499 (Base) / $399 (Digital edition)

So for the past few generations, we’ve actually seen the PlayStation stick to a similar price. The PS1 and PS2 both sold at $299 on release. It was quite a jump up after that, but there are a number of factors involved there. This early on, it would be a safe bet to place the PS6 within the $400-600 range, depending on whether we see a base model or just a digital edition moving forward.

Will there be a PS6?

Everything points towards there being a PS6 in future. We see no reason why Sony would suddenly stop their highly successful PlayStation series. There are a couple releases to get through first though, as the refreshed Pro and/or Slim versions of the current-gen PS5 are yet to come. There are even rumors of a new Sony handheld – the PlayStation Q Lite – circulating the web.

While we might have to wait until 2028 or beyond for the PS6, that doesn’t mean it’s not already being developed in the background. It’s expected that the PS6 plans are already in the pipeline, and have been for a while.

Is it worth upgrading to PS6 when it releases?

The PS5 released in November 2020, which is already well over 2 years ago. Despite that, many users feel as if the PS5 era is really only just starting. That’s because due to the pandemic and following stock shortages, which left many of us unable to obtain the PS5 at a decent price for some time.

There is definitely a lot of life left in the PS5 before we move on to the PS6. By the time it comes around, hopefully we’ll see more exclusives coming through to make it a more appealing option. We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds. It’s hard to say right whether the PlayStation 6 will be worth it on release day.

Will the PS6 have 8K support?

The PS5 has certainly been an impressive console with it’s 4K gaming performance. It’s limited when it comes to rendering games at 8K though, so can we expect to see the next generation of the PlayStation deliver fantastic 8K performance? Well, the market for 8K gaming is pretty limited at the moment, but we do expect the PS6 to deliver on outputting 8K.

The technology is moving in the direction of 8K, There’s no reason to think that the PS6 will be lacking in this regard. Even the rumored PS5 pro is slated for much better 8K support. A growing number of media will be looking to support this super high resolution in the future, and the PlayStation 6 could well be designed with that in mind – especially if it wants to last a generation.
