From Software have announced that over a year after its initial release, they are going to be releasing a major free update for their critically acclaimed feudal-era Japan action game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The update will be coming out for all platforms on 29th October and will add several new features and modes.

This update comes off the back of news that the title has just crossed the 5 million sales milestone.

Sekiro 3

First up is a new boss rush mode, to let you revisit some of the game’s formidable bosses in a dedicated mode:

“Rematch previously defeated bosses in single and consecutive battles. Extraordinary foes that once stood in the way of victory can be fought again and again to your heart’s content.”

They will also be adding new options to customize your character, with three new outfits, which can be unlocked by meeting certain in-game conditions.

“Change the Wolf’s outward appearance. There are 3 new forms to choose from to suit your mood, including “Old Ashina Shinobi” and “Tengu.””

They’re also adding a new feature called Remnant Records, an evolution of the various different messaging systems that have appeared in their games in some form since Demon’s Souls. This lets you share 30 second long recordings of your in-game actions:

“Send a recording of your actions to the worlds of other shinobi. “Remnant” recordings can be up to 30 seconds long and may also be affixed with a message. Share strategies and hints via network to broaden the scope of play.”

Sekiro 2

In the roughly three months between now and the release of this update, it’s going to be interesting to see if they come up with any other new features to include with this update, or if there are any other minor improvements that could be made.

It’s a great looking game, with some expansive environments and fantastic character designs and animations. You can check out the system requirements here, and this is a game where performance is key, since a stable framerate will be particularly useful during the tense and punishing combat.

We love seeing older games get updated like this. I wonder if Sekiro will still be getting updates 21 years later like Worms Armageddon.
