The latest patch for New World was deployed yesterday, addressing a number of issues that have persisted in Amazon’s MMORPG since launch. The most significant change was a tweak to Faction influence, which has had players up in arms over what isn’t in the 1.02 New World update rather than what is. Namely, a lack of provision for server transfers, the game’s lack of character customization options, perceived poor drop rates, the apparent uselessness of repair kits, the unnecessary requirement to craft ammo, the wide reporting of false bans and spoof accounts and, of course, a distinct lack of mounts

The New World 1.02 patch was effectively a laundry list of bug fixes, many of them updating UI issues, such as bonuses that were not displaying correctly, and timers and character states that were not resetting or progressing as they should. Amusing (the first time) and frustrating (all the other times) visual bugs such as random teleporting and corpse respawning appear to have been eliminated, and the game seems less prone to crashing – which is, of course, all very welcome.

Server transfer update

Still, this was to be the week to expect the already delayed rollout of server transfers, when players marooned due to the server queues at launch could start migrating towards the servers their friends were on. After revealing how the transfer process would play out last week (and how limited they would be), Amazon has yet to announce when things would kick off. Clearly there was some expectation from fans that this week’s patch notes might at least have held a clue.

To be fair to Amazon Games, New World is only two weeks from its release, a release that, it should be stressed, has been a massive success in terms of numbers. Within a week New World had amassed more than 900,000 simultaneous players and a sales figure that, according to SteamSpy, is somewhere between 10 and 20 million – far more than World of Warcraft managed in its first few years. New character options, mounts, and the stripping out of items and gameplay systems are unlikely to be addressed in the first couple of months, let alone weeks, but if Amazon wants to build on it’s early win, those server transfers need to be a priority.
