Looks like the next video game adaptation snapped up by Netflix has just been confirmed. Splinter Cell is getting an animated TV series adaptation with Ubisoft and Derek Kolstad, the writer of the John Wick film franchise, on board.

Splinter Cell is a series of stealth video games which started with Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell game in 2002. The games follow protagonist Sam Fischer, a highly trained agent of a black-ops sub-division at the NSA. The most recent game back out in 2013, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist which was the sixth installment in the series. It looks like another game is in current development, but there’s been no real confirmation of this.

According to reports, two seasons have already been confirmed, with 16 episodes ordered for Netflix. The rumors are pointing to this being an animated rather than a live-action series which will be an interesting way to revisit the story. Many of us have been eager for a movie adaptation for years now, and they even actually announced one with a teaser trailer years ago, so knowing that we’ll get at least two seasons of a TV show is great news.

However, beyond that, not a lot of details are known as Netflix and Ubisoft has declined to give an official comment on the specifics. Without an official announcement or confirmation, it’s hard to say whether this is a definite project in the works but it appears genuine so far.

Derek Kolstad will be turning his talents to write and act as an executive producer on the new series. Kolstad’s involvement in the series has got plenty of fans excited due to the popularity of the John Wick franchise which has grossed $584 million worldwide. Kolstad also has Falcon and Winter Soldier on his recent credits and was a co-writer on the recent Die Hart TV series. So, it’ll be interesting to see what he does with this series. He’s already got a solid track record of writing for action films.

This isn’t the first game franchise Ubisoft have given the go ahead for an adaptation. We’ve already had an Assassin’s Creed film in 2016, starring Michael Fassbender. Ubisoft has also been working with Apple TV on the Mythic Quest TV series which follows a game development studio which has created a World of Warcraft-style role-playing game.

Netflix has already had plenty of success adapting games for TV with The Witcher series, and of course their brilliant Castlevania animated adaptation, so we have high hopes for this one too.

While we don’t know much about this project yet, it’s certainly got fans eager to learn more. Will the original actors be coming back to voice their characters? Or will there be an entirely new cast?

What do you think of the upcoming Splinter Cell adaptation? Would you have preferred a live-action adaptation? Let us know in the comments.
