Even though the last title in the Streets of Rage franchise was released almost 26 years ago, it’s still a name that fans of beat ’em up games hold close to their hearts.

Not only do we now know the final release date of this title, but we’ve also had some new information on what fans of the series can come to expect.

Streets Of Rage 4 Release Date

If you’re excited to get your hands on Streets of Rage 4, it’s all set for a planned release date of April 30th.

Following on from the release of the last installment on the Sega Genesis back in 1994, Streets of Rage 4 will be available on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One worldwide.

Streets Of Rage 4 Trailer

If you’re excited to grab a glimpse of the action, take a look at the following trailer.

Streets Of Rage 4 Gameplay

As you can see from the trailer, this is more than just a polished reboot of the franchise. Both the environments and the characters’ models look as great as we’d hoped, and there’s plenty of variety in the level design.

Streets of Rage 4 keeps the core gameplay alive that fans back in the 90s loved. This is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up where players will make their way through the environments fighting wave after wave of enemies.

Each character has its own unique fighting style and set of special moves, as well as a new ability to recover health through successful combo attacks.

The trailer also shows off the return of the Battle Mode, a game type that allows you and your friends to battle it out to see just who is the best. This takes a break from the usual wave-fighting action and is great for some extra training or a high-stakes competition.

What’s New?

A Whole New Roster

There will be two new characters for players to use in this title, as well as the returning characters Blaze Fielding, Axel Stone, and Adam Hunter. These characters are all painstakingly hand-drawn, and each has a completely different playing style.

Fans of the previous editions will also be pleased to know that a roster of twelve retro characters will also be available for use in the game – and these aren’t simple ports either!

Although each character still has their own pixelated form from the 90s, this still looks great when you see it in-game. The sprites were ripped straight from the old games frame-by-frame, and their animations and timings have been reconstructed and updated to fit into this new game.

This brings the total roster to a whopping 17 playable characters that fans can master and enjoy.

Choose Between A New Or Retro Soundtrack

Fans of the previous game will be delighted to know that the electronic-influenced music will be coming back to Streets of Rage 4. Artists such as Yuzō Koshiro, Motohiro Kawashima, Yoko Shimomura, Harumi Fujita, Keiji Yamagishi have all lent their expertise in crafting a soundtrack that fans will be sure to love.

For those who want to reminisce in a little nostalgia, the soundtracks from the previous titles will also be available in this game. It’s interesting that both these retro additions to the game stemmed from the developers simply using them as placeholders while creating the title and found that they fit so well.

12 Unique Stages

We can see from the trailer that there will be 12 new stages for you to play around in when playing Battle Mode. These include ‘The Streets’, ‘Chinatown’, Y Island’, ‘Cargo Ship’, ‘Police Precinct’, ‘Y Tower’, ‘To The Concert’, and ‘Skytrain’.

Each of these stages is so well drawn that they look like they could easily be a desktop wallpaper. The shading and lighting on these stages are especially impressive, and we just can’t wait to get stuck in.

Final Word

It’s always nice when a developer seeks out to really add something new to a title rather than just releasing a remastered version with higher-resolution graphics and a higher frame rate.

It’s been a while since we’ve played a beat ‘em up game that’s really competed with the sheer joy of the old Streets of Rage games. From what we’ve seen so far on the trailers and news sites concerning Streets of Rage 4, it looks like it’s going to be a great addition to the franchise.
