Valve has a reputation for being a very community and mod-friendly studio. They don’t often shut down projects and more often than not. In fact, they’ve often made a lot of their tools available to the community.

So imagine the player’s shock when very popular Team Fortress 2 mods start to be suspended. But fear not, we strongly doubt that this is the beginning of something terrible. In fact, it might be the beginning of something great!

Valve Suspends Popular TF2 Mods

Valve has apparently suspended downloads of two of the most popular Team Fortress 2 mods, namely TF2 Classic and Open Fortress. Though many are nervous and worried this means the end of a beloved mod, others are optimistic.

The reason for the suspension is “due to an arrangement with Valve”. This doesn’t strike us as the end of the mods. But rather, possibly something linked with Valve directly, perhaps we’ll see some sort of integrated mod launcher about to be released? Or they are being imported directly onto Steam.

What is Team Fortress 2 Classic / TF2 Classic

Team Fortress 2 – to this day – remains a staple in the first person multiplayer action games. If anything, it was the birth of many games after it, like Overwatch, Valorant and many more. What made TF2 so special though were the characters, each so fun to play and simply listen to.

TF2 Classic

Considering the game has been out since 2007, it’s no surprise that it might have gone a little stale since. As such, to keep the game alive and well, a lot of people ended up modding it. With various mods to enhance the game and bring a fresh new perspective to it.

TF2 Yellow Freen

To this day, one of the most popular mods is TF2 Classic, released in 2020. Showing just how well-loved the game still is now!

This mod reimagines the game using its original 2008-2009 incarnation. Building on a 2008 leak of the game’s source code, the mod features both community-made content as well as originally cut content. With new weapons, game modes and teams! TF2 Classic is a very popular mod of the game now.

What is Open Fortress

Open Fortress

Open Fortress is a free and open-source TF2 mod that had added a series of new characters, game modes and story! They maintain the iconic aesthetic of the TF2 games, but adds a little more modern elements to it.

What is Team Fortress Classic / TFC

Team Fortress Classic is a much more rustic prequel to Team Fortress 2. It is much closer to the very first Team Fortress, which was originally a mod for Quake. Although it features all the same characters and classes, it was a game released way back in 1999. Nonetheless, many players still enjoy the game and even play it to this day.

Without Team Fortress Classic, we wouldn’t have had TF2 at all.

So fear not, although TF2 Classic and Open Fortress may be temporarily suspended on the download front, it’s not like Valve to cease and desist fan projects. We’ll see something special soon, I’m sure!
