While there are many very budget-friendly processor options on the market, personally, I think spending between $130 – $180 is a good range when it comes to price and performance. I’ve spotted a Ryzen CPU that’s sitting in that range, after a series of price-drops which kicked off earlier this year.
Right now, you can grab the Ryzen 7 5800XT for 39% off its list price of $249.00, bringing it to just $152.00. As mentioned, the pricing history shows it tumbling for a while now, but it’s still a very good price for a versatile and punchy CPU for a mid-range build, as you’ll see.
AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800XT 8-Core, 16-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor
The Ryzen 7 5800XT came out last year, and is essentially a refresh of the impressive Ryzen 7 5800X. While we haven’t yet reviewed the XT offering, we did review the 5800X, which seriously impressed us and earned 4.5 stars.
The Ryzen 7 5800XT, for the price, boasts a decent amount of cores and threads, high boost clock, and surprisingly large L3 cache, which will come in handy for gaming performance. It’s also an AM4 option, meaning you can keep costs down on motherboards, RAM, SSDs, and more, as you’ll be sticking to Gen4 components.
So this a great option for both budget and mid-range AM4 builds for gaming and productivity. It’s essentially a ‘do-it-all’ type of CPU that delivers excellent value for money at this price point.
As for whether it’s the best time to buy, that’s an interesting one. As you can see from the graph above it has been lower, in fact, it’s been at its lowest earlier this month coming in at closer to $120.
Since 2025 started it’s plunged in price and looks to be hovering around $160 as an average. Is it a massive saving compared to that? No. Could it go lower? Yes. Is it still great value for money and a hidden gem for cost-effective builds – absolutely.
The big win here is what you’re getting for the price and the other savings you’ll make by building on the AM4 platform.
