I’m sure you’re all aware of the massive Twitch data breach that occurred over the past couple of days – it’s pretty much the only news I’ve seen for the last 24 hours. The Amazon-owned streaming site suffered a huge data breach which resulted in 125GB of personal data being shared to everyone’s favourite degenerate message board, 4chan – fantastic.

Whilst Twitch has been fairly quiet on the subject, company updates have now been released confirming that there was indeed a data breach – albeit not addressing whether or not login details or credit card information was shared. In a statement made by Twitch, they confirmed that some internal data had been ‘exposed to the internet due to an error in a Twitch server configuration change’. The statement goes on to also mention that the company is hard at work to rectify any potential knock-on effects of this breach.

Alongside an active investigation into how the data breach actually occurred, Twitch has also decided to reset all stream keys for the entirety of the site. If you’re fairly new to the world of Twitch, a stream key is a unique password that is used to enable you to stream on your account. If your stream key lands in the hands of another individual, they could theoretically stream on your Twitch channel.

To ensure the highest levels of safety, Twitch has decided to reset all stream keys – stating that this is the safest way to ensure any data breached is now irrelevant.

Here’s what Twitch had to say regarding the matter:

“Out of an abundance of caution, we have reset all stream keys. You can get your new stream key here. Depending on which broadcast software you use, you may need to manually update your software with this new key to start your next stream:

  • Twitch Studio, Streamlabs, Xbox, PlayStation and Twitch Mobile App users should not need to take any action for your new key to work.
  • OBS users who have connected their Twitch account should also not need to take any action. OBS users that have not connected their Twitch account to OBS will need to manually copy their stream key from their Twitch Dashboard and paste it into OBS.
  • For all others, please refer to specific setup instructions for your software of choice.

Thank you,
Twitch Staff”

Whilst this doesn’t exactly fill any Twitch user with confidence, it is the first step in moving back to normality.
