WWE 2K22: Release date and Everything Else You Need to Know

Hopefully it's not a development hell in a cell.

WWE 2K22 release date
Last Updated:

With the WWE 2K series taking a year off after the disastrous release of  WWE 2K20, wrestling fans are massively anticipating WWE 2K22, the newest entry in the sports entertainment game series now developed by Visual Concepts and 2K Sports.

When is the WWE 2K22 release date?

The new game will be on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It is coming out in March 2022. This is unusual for a 2K Sports WWE title, as previous releases in the WWE 2K franchise have happened in early-to-mid October. More time working on the game can only be a good thing however, as previous release WWE 2K20 was one of the worst wrestling video games ever made.

What’s different about WWE 2K222?

WWE 2K franchise exec producer Patrick Gilmore also stated in a Reddit AMA that they’re “… looking at popular previous games like No Mercy or Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain, along with top franchise pieces and more modern wrestling and fighting games to create a whole new philosophical foundation for the game.”

Match commentator Michael Cole revealed on the July 23 episode of WWE SmackDown that the software will feature a new game engine and improved fighting controls. Interestingly WWE 2K22 will also be the first entry in the series to use new 80 camera scanning rigs to capture WWE Superstar likenesses, so the graphics should be better than ever.

So far, we’re hearing all the right things in regards to this new game in the series, but only time will tell if the franchise can fully recover from the loss of development studio Yuke’s, who have defected after 18 years of collaboration to make video games for WWE’s largest competitor All Elite Wrestling (AEW) instead.

Wrestlers currently confirmed to appear in WWE 2K22 include the likes of Rey Mysterio, Ric Flair, Randy Orton and Angel Garza. No modes have currently been confirmed, but we are likely to see the online Road to Glory mode return as it has been a staple of the wrestling game series since WWE 2K18.

We know the March 2020 soft release date is still vague, and we will update this page when a more concrete release date enters the ring. If you like fighting games, why not check out our list of the five Best Fighting Games of 2020 in the meantime?
