Will the iPhone 15 be waterproof? If so, what will be the iPhone 15 waterproof rating? Information is scare currently, but we can make a decent guess.

A smartphone’s durability is always an important factor to consider while making a purchase. In this regard, the iPhone has always been a good example. However, we don’t have any news regarding the IP rating of the upcoming iPhone 15, but it is likely to have the same level of dust and water resistance as the iPhone 14 series.

iPhone IP rating

The entire iPhone 14 series line-up has the same IP rating of IP68. Now, most of you may not know how the IP rating works. So, here’s a little clarification.

The two numbers in the rating represent the device’s resistivity to the solid and liquid particles. The first number represents the resistance to the solid particles, measured on a scale of 0 to 6. The second number represents the liquid resistance, measured on a scale of 0 to 9.

The number 6 in the IP rating means the iPhone 14 series is safe from dust and totally resistant to small solid particles of dust or sand. So, there’s no need to worry about your iPhone getting dirty. However, you can use water if the device gets too dirty and you want to clean it. Now, you might be wondering, is that safe? Well, it is safe. The number 8 in the IP68 rating means the device will be safe if immersed in fresh water for up to 30 minutes at a maximum depth of roughly 19 feet or 6 meters. Due to these safety reasons, the IP68 rating has become an industry standard—most leading smartphone manufacturers opt for the IP68 rating. All the iPhones have been rated IP68 since the iPhone 11.

However, there’s one thing you should remember about the IP ratings. The devices are always in pristine condition when tested for IP ratings; real-life conditions may be different–for example, if you have a damaged display, your device has a higher risk of getting internal damage as water may enter the device through the cracked surface.

iPhone resistance to salt water

While the IP68 rating states your device will be safe from the immersion of fresh water, the rating is vague regarding other kinds of liquids. Salt water can be very damaging to your iPhone. So, it is best not to swim in a saltwater pool or go to the ocean while carrying the iPhone.
