Will the iPhone 15 have USB C ports? Or will it stick to its Lightning Port guns?
Even when the entire smartphone industry shifted to USB-C, Apple stuck to its proprietary Lightning Port. Regarding capability, the Lightning was inferior to USB-C but having their own standard means the company can make money off people who are more likely to buy their own brand of cable, rather than from a third party using a more widespread design like USB-C. The tech giant may have planned a transition at some point in the future, but not likely anytime soon.

However, all that changed last year with the EU mandate, which forced companies like Apple to submit to USB-C port support. It was originally estimated Apple would probably bring up the change with the iPhone 16, but it seems like Apple is ready to use the USB-C to the iPhone 15. The company hasn’t officially confirmed it, but the recent leaks suggest this is likely; however, there’s a catch.
According to new reports, the cables which are not certified by Apple’s MFI or Made For iPhone program won’t be able to take full advantage of the device’s power. Apple isn’t the first tech company to resort to this move. Companies like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo also produce USB-C smartphones with fast charging. But they limit the super-fast charging capabilities to their own proprietary cables. While Apple is not doing the same thing, it can also be a form of quality control.
A few relatively weak sources initially reported that Apple is trying to include USB-C into the MFI program. Then, ShrimpApplePro, a fairly reliable source, claimed that the company is trying to collaborate with Foxconn with the hopes of producing USB-C EarPods and charging cables. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
All-in-ally, Apple is still expected to launch the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro with USB-C and fast-charging support later this year. However, it is still not clear if the company would stick to the relatively slow 27W charging speed it currently offers or upgrade to a faster charging speed like 33W or 45W.
