When it comes to classes, Ashes of Creation is slightly different from many of the popular MMORPGs currently on offer. Typically, there are two class systems, games such as Blade and Soul and World of Warcraft encompass the traditional ‘fixed class system’ whereby you choose a class upon starting the game as part of the character creation. The other option is what you will find in games such as Archeage and Final Fantasy, where you can switch classes based on the situation you are in. When it comes to Ashes of Creation, the class system is slightly different.

Ashes of Creation takes a blend of both systems – a fixed primary archetype and a changeable secondary archetype which can be changed based on the current situation. The primary archetype is selected during the character creation, and you can choose from eight character classes.

Archetype System

In Ashes of Creation, there is an 8 class system: Bard, Cleric, Fighter, Mage, Tank, Rogue, Ranger, and Summoner. When you take the 8 archetypes and combine these with the secondary archetype you are given a total of 64 combinations. Now, keep in mind – these 64 combinations are simply a variant of the original 8 archetypes.

Character Creation & Starting Classes

When you begin the game, you will choose one of the 8 archetypes. It is only at level 25 that you will be able to begin choosing your secondary class. For example, if you began the game and chose Tank as one of the 8 classes, when you hit level 25 you can choose a secondary class and if you chose Fighter you would become a Knight (see the table below).

Overall, we know there are 8 primary classes, combined with the choice of secondary classes it makes 64 classes to choose from based on various different scenarios within the game. The idea of such a wide variety of classes is for the gamer to think about how your character would work as part of the team at that point in time and choose a secondary class to work alongside the team dynamic.
