Expectations for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 couldn’t have been higher when it originally launched because it had to dramatically outperform Nvidia’s top-tier graphics card from the Turing era.

But like the rest of the Nvidia Ampere, the RTX 3080 hasn’t just risen to the occasion; offering quick 4K gaming at a reasonable, if not entirely inexpensive, MSRP completely redefines the performance of the top-tier graphics cards.

In fact, the RTX 3080 appears to represent the biggest generational gain in power we have seen in a very long time compared to the cards it replaces.

Based on the Ampere graphics architecture, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 offers significant upgrades over Turing in terms of both gaming performance and power efficiency.

The amount of RAM 3080 needs depends on your computer’s purpose and whether you’re referring to system RAM or VRAM of the GPU.

The RTX 3080 is available in 8GB, 10GB and 12GB VRAM configurations for laptops and desktop computers, respectively.

If 12GB is insufficient, you would need to look to an RTX 4090, RTX 3090, RTX A5000, or RTX A6000 GPU because it has more VRAM than any other option.

With an RTX 3080, 16GB of system RAM and 10GB of VRAM are typically sufficient for gaming. However, some demanding productivity applications, like 8K video editing, may require more than 16GB of RAM.

If you want to save money, your only choice is to go with 8GB of memory because slower RAM is no longer more affordable. If you intend to be able to upgrade soon, get an 8GB stick first, followed by an identical 8GB stick to make 16GB RAM.

If you have more budget, you might use higher frequency sticks or 32GB if you create content. Any price up to 3600MHz CL16 should be affordable; after this, the performance improvements start to diminish significantly.

Although when it comes to DDR5 it is at more of a premium. So it can be a good idea to get one stick at first and add more in later. But it does have to be the same exact model.
