Overview
In the United States, the dominant live-streaming platform as of February 2021 was Twitch with a share of respondents of 47%. Second came YouTube Gaming with 40% and third was Facebook Gaming at 16%.
In Q1 2022, Twitch saw the most hours watched with a total of 6.1 billion hours watched within the first quarter of 2022. Second came YouTube Gaming with a total 1.1 billion hours watched.
Out of all quarter 1s within 2019 to 2021, Q1 2021 saw the most hours of video game live streams watched amongst all platforms with an average of 8.8 billion hours watched. This is up from 3.6 billion hours the two years previously.
By revenue share however, Twitch only amassed a total of 22% share within leading video content platforms in 2020, 60% of the share was labelled as ‘Other’.
Audiences
The majority of desktop traffic that comes through to Twitch is through Direct 86.47% with an additional 7.47% coming from Social. No traffic comes from Display Ads only grasping 0.02% of traffic referred.
41% of Twitch’s userbase consist of 16 to 24 year olds which was last recorded in 2019. The second most popular age group was between 25 to 34 years old.
English has stayed the predominant language spoken on Twitch worldwide as of May 2021 with a share of 55.9%. The second most popular language after this was Spanish at 11.3%.
Twitch’s userbase is continually growing, with it to be forecasted that the userbase with reach 46.5 million it’s projected that by 2024 that this number will reach 51.6.

Amongst countries, Twitch.tv’s distribution of traffic sees it being redirected to the United States with a total regional distribution of 21.2% with it being last recorded in February 2022.

As of the beginning of 2022, Fextralife is noted as the most popular streamer by total views with an accumulated total of 1.8 million views. Following this channel is Riot Games with 1.3m views.
As of 2021, the most popular channel through peak all time concurrent viewers is ‘TheGrefg’ who streams games such as Fortnite and Just Chatting reached 2.39 million concurrent viewers – this is currently a record peak amongst the platform.
As of 2021, the most popular Twitch channel remains to be Tyler Blevins – nicknamed ‘ninja’ on Twitch with a total of 17.4 million followers on the platform as of February 2022.
Games
As of January 2022, Rust logged in the most viewers at a peak rate of 917,700 in the preceding 30 days of the time that it was recorded in January.
In regards to CSGO on Twitch, it took a dip as of April 2022 with an average of 81,000 viewers. CSGO had peaked in recent months in February 2022 with an average viewership of 100,000 and November 2021 of 111,000 due to the PGL Major in Stockholm.
As of March 2022, Elden Ring has become the most watched video game with a total of 74.7 million hours watched weekly logged in. Grand Theft Auto V comes in second with a total of 29.7 million and League of Legends came in third with 28.4 million.
VALORANT became Twitch’s most popular new IP through hours watched by that the game accumulated a total of 737 hours on the game through the live-streaming platform.
By categories, Just Chatting was the most popular genre to watch in 2021 – logging in over 3 billion hours of global watch time. Following this is Grand Theft Auto 5 at 2.1 billion and League of Legends at 1.8 billion.
Content moderation
In the second half of 2020, creators and their modes imposed over 3.9 million permanent channel bans and an additional 4.5 million temporary timeouts. The number of bans had increased 72% compared to the previous fiscal period.
71.4% of live content occurred on channels that had Twitch’s AutoMod feature actively monitoring chat for harmful messages. At the same time however, 86% of content was watched in channels with at least one active moderator.
Mobile streaming
