Yes, you can access a private subreddit, but you have to ask a moderator of that subreddit to grant you access. Beyond that, there’s no other way.

There’s a multitude of private Subreddits out there that might be enticing to you, but if you don’t know the moderators of that subreddit, how do you message them to get in?

That very simple, when you compose a message, just put r/subreddit and the message will reach the mod mail of that Subreddit. Mod mail is a mailbox that all of the moderators of the Subreddit can access. However long it takes to get a reply depends on the moderators of the sub, you may not even get a reply at all.

For example, there may be certain criteria for you to meet if you want to get into a Sub, take r/top for example. If you wish to get into r/top, you must have a Karma in the top 15 (over 107,000). Once you meet the criteria, you may message the mods of r/top and request access.
