The Epic Games Store launched back at the end of 2018, and slowly but steadily they are implementing various different features that have been industry standard for quite some time.

For now, mod support is being beta tested, so it’s limited in scale, and is expected to potentially have some teething troubles. For now it’s only available for Mechwarrior 5. In a statement today, Epic said:

“Mod support is now in beta on the Epic Games Store, starting with MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.

This is an early iteration of the feature, but you can expect to see more titles supported in the future. Keep an eye out!”

The official website for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries goes into some more detail, and highlights a few of their favorite mods that are already available. Or you can browse all mods available here.

It’s not yet clear exactly how this process works. We don’t know if Epic themselves, developers, or publishers, or perhaps the community of players will shoulder the burden for curating the most interesting mods going forward. It’s also not clear exactly what the submission process is for various different mods. It’s also not clear if any work is being done to ensure compatibility between different mods, or with game updates. Hopefully Epic will go into more detail about how exactly mod support on Epic Game Store works in due time.

We’ve seen games like Sega’s A Total War Saga: Troy have to drop mod support entirely because of the move from Steam to Epic Games Store, which perhaps might be addressed if mod support could be added for that game too. Hopefully, in time it will be possible for all games on Epic Game Store to have mod support.

They haven’t yet outlined with other titles might get mod support, or how long this beta period is expected to last, but overall this is a positive move that brings Epic Game Store another step closer to being a well rounded and polished platform for buying games. It would be great to see them smooth out their purchase process by offering a shopping cart, sorting out all the issues they seem to have with pricing inconsistencies and confusing promotions during their various sales, and perhaps we could imagine a future where people might choose to use Epic Game Store as a preference, rather than because Epic keep paying publishers to remove games from competing stores.

Modding is one of the cornerstones of PC gaming, where games can be elevated or even fixed by the right mod adding the right feature or functionality. If you’re interested in mods in general, you should check out our weekly column, Monday Mods, where each week we highlight an interesting mod.
