Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is getting the remake treatment. Bioware’s precursor to the Mass Effect series and easily among the best Star Wars games ever made, was teased at the start of yesterday’s Playstation Showcase 2021 by way of a cinematic trailer that was as short on detail as it was on running time.
What we do know is that the KOTOR remake will be a timed console exclusive on Playstation 5 and that the game will also appear on PC.
There’s been no release date announced for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake, but considering the game has been in development for some time (there were rumors of its existence back in January), a 2022 release date seems reasonable. That said, with the original game releasing July 15, 2003, perhaps the KOTOR Remake is being lined up to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary?
The KOTOR Remake is a timed Playstation exclusive on console, meaning that the game won’t be available on Xbox for some time after its PS5 release. The exclusivity on the Final Fantasy 7 remake was a year, which should give Xbox gamers an idea of how long they’ll have to wait.
The PC release of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is likely to the the same as, or very close to, the PS5 release. We are hopeful for a 2022 release, but if the scope of the game maes it will encompass both KOTOR and KOTOR 2, it could be that Disney are lining the game up for release to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the series – or the release of the rumored movie. In that case, 2023 seems likely.
Handling development for the updated KOTOR is Aspyr, which ported the original game to iOS and Android, and has also delivered serviceable PS4 and Switch versions of the classic Jedi Knight and Republic Commando games. However, it would appear efforts on this particular remake are by some order of magnitude more difficult, as there reports that it will offer storyline aspects culled from both the original game and its troubled sequel, KOTOR 2: The Sith Lords.
Set 4,000 years before the events in the Skywalker Saga movie series, Knights of the Old Republic portrays a more civilized age in the Star Wars timeline, when the Galactic Republic was at its height, and the Jedi and Sith were abundant. The main protagonist of the series is Revan, who since his 2003 debut in the original Bioware game has grown in stature to become one of the most popular characters in Star Wars folklore.
After the release of Obsidian’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords, Bioware returned to the series with the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic in 2011. Despite there not being a new Stars Wars game since that’s been set such a long, long time ago, hints that the next Star Wars film will be based during the time of the Old Republic suggests that the pre-Skywalker timeline has a great future that the KOTOR remake couold be integral to.
Rest assured we’ll be watching KOTOR developments very closely.
