Monday Mods 22nd June: Doom 64 Weapon Pack

We were equally pleased and surprised when id announced that they would be rereleasing Doom 64 for PC and modern consoles. It felt like the kind of game that could easily be lost to history, left behind on the N64. Whilst the rest of the early Doom games have had multiple different releases over the years, Doom 64 got barely even an acknowledgment between its original 1997 release and the new port released back in March of this year.

The Doom 64 rerelease was lovingly developed by Nightdive Studios, who are a highly specialized studio, with a great deal of expertise in repacking old games to run on modern systems, with all sorts of enhancements and improvements, whilst remaining as faithful as possible to the game as it was originally released. They’ve handled projects like modern rereleases of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, System Shock, and the upcoming Shadow Man: Remastered.

Perhaps one unintended consequence of releasing this game that was previously an N64 exclusive on PC is that people can now have a poke around the files, and use various different assets and bits of code in developing their own mods. One such modder has done just that and used the weapon files from Doom 64 to create a mod for the original Doom.

Doom 64 Weapon Pack is a mod for Doom, that lets you replace the weapons from Doom with their counterparts from Doom 64. Weapons like the handgun, shotgun, chaingun, and other classic tools of violence will be upgraded with nicer sprites taken from Doom 64. Check out the mods page on moddb for the download and for installation instructions.

This mod may work with other versions of Doom, but it’s created with the intention of it being used with the Steam version of The Ultimate Doom.

Check back with us every Monday, where we’ll be taking time to highlight an interesting new mod each week, to help you push your games to do things that the original creators never intended.
