The Reddit protests have been a messy affair, with subs going dark to protest API changes, then Reddit admins forcing them to come back online. Many Subreddits have taken to a more passive approach to protesting, which is why the Steam Subreddit has become about actual steam.
It makes sense, can’t really knock them for it. They are technically serving the community and it is indeed on topic.

The Steam Subreddit has become about literal Steam
The Steam subreddit has long since been the go-to place for all things Valve and Steam related. The community there really, really cares about what’s going on with Valve and its all-powerful Steam gaming platform.
If you choose to enter the Subreddit today, you will find no discussions of the latest Steam update or bugs encountered. You will find only steam, not the steam you want, the other kind of steam. Hot water! This is why this act of protesting is so clever.
Here are some examples of the Subreddit submissions over on r/steam the past day or so:

If you ask us, this is a much better way to protest, it’s a disruption for sure, but doesn’t harm anyone the same way a full blackout does or going NSFW. And some of us happen to find literal steam pretty cool and interesting.
If you want to read more about the Reddit protests you can in our article around it.
Admins of Reddit have gone for the “nuclear option” and removed a lot of the moderators of subreddits still protesting, this could be the beginning of the end for Reddit as we know it. Reddit will forever be scared by this protest and it’s fallen far in the eyes of the community.
