ChatGPT is an AI model created by OpenAI that is available online so theoretically it should be available anywhere where you can get yourself an internet connection. Some countries however have placed restrictions on the usage of ChatGPT due to legal or regulatory reasons which might mean you don’t have access.

Limitations on network infrastructure can also be a factor. Google has recently released their own chatbot Google Bard in many countries around the world. ChatGPT is a free and paid-for service that has fast become a household name in many places, however, some countries have restricted access to ChatGPT based on a variety of factors including concerns over data protection.

ChatGPT is available in Italy again

As of April 30th, 2023 ChatGPT has been made available once again in Italy. The chatbot had until recently been banned in Italy because of concerns over users data privacy.

As of now however ChatGPT is once again available in Italy. This follows OpenAI taking important steps to comply with European data protection regulations. These measures included providing clear information on how users personal data is used to train ChatGPT’s algorithm as well as offering users the opportunity to object to this use. The welcome screen has also updated with links to ChatGPT’s privacy policy and data processing methods.

ChatGPT banned in some schools

The use of ChatGPT in academic work has raised a lot of debate around the ethics of AI content generators being used in schools. Despite some obvious shortcomings, ChatGPT has proven its mettle in an academic context by writing coherent essays and even passing exams such as the United States Medical Licensing Examination.

At university level Sciences Po in Paris and RV University in Bengaluru, India have both placed outright bans on the use of the software. In the US ChatGPT has been banned in both New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and the Los Angeles Unified School District.

It remains to be seen whether these bans will remain it place but one thing is clear, AI content generation is here to stay!

Is ChatGPT blocked in Italy?

Not any more. ChatGPT was previously blocked in Italy after data protection authorities decided the system had “no legal grounds to collect personal information about its users“. However, it has been available since April 30th, 2023.
