What is the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D laptop processor?

The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is very similar to the current top-specced AMD Ryzen 7000 series laptop processor, the Ryzen 9 7945HX – with the same 32 threads / 16 cores, 5.4GHz boost clock, and 16MB L2 cache – except with an additional 64MB L3 cache added to one of the chiplets, and a slightly lower base clock of 2.3GHz (as opposed to the 2.5GHz of the Ryzen 9 7945HX).

This enormous boost to the L3 cache is what AMD is labeling ‘3D V-Cache’, and essentially means a boost in performance at virtually no increase in thermal output, as the processor can access greater volumes of stored data faster than it would were it relying on the primary RAM. More L3 cache improves performance levels at lower TDPs in particular, and given that laptop CPUs (and all components) are more limited by the power restrictions of the laptop chassis, it definitely makes sense to incorporate this tech in laptop CPUs.

As you can see in the below graph on the right, AMD claims that the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D will give an average FPS uplift of over 15% across the (apparently 11) titles they tested, with performance ranging from a 4% drop in one title at the bottom end to a 53% gain at the top end. These tests were conducted at 1080p resolution, however, and it’s likely that the performance boost will be reduced at higher resolutions when the GPU does an increasing amount of the heavy lifting.
