The History

Back in 2014 Twitch Plays Pokémon broke new ground by creating a bot on Twitch running Pokemon Red, which viewers could control through bot commands and thus collectively play the game themselves rather than watch a streamer do it. The enterprise was an interesting and novel experiment, to the extent that a documentary of the event has been made about it.

Following Twitch Plays Pokemon came Twitter Plays Pokémon, this time courtesy of a different programmer named Constantin Liétard, which was essentially more of the same except this time taking place within the creator’s Twitter avatar and controlled through followers commenting Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, Start, Select etc.

Now, the same programmer who did Twitter Plays Pokemon, has, surprise surprise, come out with Discord Plays Pokemon, a new collaborative adventure, this time playing Pokemon Emerald!

Server members control the action via reactions. Each individual reaction essentially acts as a vote for a particular action and are saved every 2.5 seconds, before being counted by the bot and the winning vote being inputted into the game.
