2070 Super vs 1080 Ti

We will be comparing two popular graphics cards, created by Nvidia. These two GeForce GPUs are the RTX 2070 Super and the GTX 1080 Ti.

In this article, we will be looking at their overall specification to find out which is the better model. We will be benchmarking the overall FPS and MRender. We will also be comparing the VRAM and architecture of both.

Nvidia

If you are new to gaming, you may not be familiar with Nvidia. Nvidia specializes in graphics cards and arguably creates the best models available.

They took the gaming world by storm in 1997, when they produced their first GPU. Since then, they have remained popular with PC gamers.

When it comes to Nvidia’s flagship high-end GPUs, companies like AMD have struggled to match the specifications. While AMD has managed to close the competitive gap in recent years, the majority of Nvidia’s GPUs outperform AMD.

While Nvidia is best known for its high-end graphics cards, they also produce many mid to low range cards. Nvidia is always striving to release the highest spec and technologically advanced GPUs and overall, their products are impressive.

Architecture

Here are the clock speed specs for these GPUs:

2070 Super:

Base Clock – 1605MHz
Boost Clock – 1815MHz

1080 Ti:

Base Clock – 1480MHz
Boost Clock – 1632MHz

Architecture is an important aspect to consider. The better architecture your GPU has, the better it will perform overall. It will also improve your gameplay.

When looking at the architecture of both GeForce cards, it is clear that the 2070 Super is the more expensive GPU.

The GeForce 2070 Super uses Nvidia Turing architecture. This architecture is powerful and enables DLFF2.0 AI-Enhanced graphics. It performs 6x better in comparison to Nvidia’s older GPUs.

It has ray tracing capabilities, and the tensor cores are some of the most advanced. The architecture uses concurrent processing and next-gen variable ray shading. The mesh shaders are impressive and do not slow down gameplay.

The GeForce 1080 Ti uses Nvidia Pascal architecture. While this is still fantastic architecture, it is outperformed by Nvidia Turing. Nvidia Pascal performs 3x faster and better in comparison to previous GPUs and supports next-gen VR. It supports DirectX 12 and provides great overall efficiency.

When looking toward the clock speeds, the 2070 Super is impressive. While the speeds of the 1080 Ti are great for gaming, they cannot rival the 2070 Super’s performance.

Cooling

The cooling system for your GPU is important, especially if you are planning to overclock. Both GPUs have sufficient cooling systems. 2070 has two fans that help to circulate the air and keep the GPU cool. The 1080 ti only has one radial fan. Both feature a vapor chamber.

The 2070 Super has a maximum temperature of 88℃. The 1080 Ti’s max temperature is 91℃. It is always recommended to run a GPU under these temperatures to prevent overheating.

The recommended power supply for the 2070 Super is 650W, and for the 1080 Ti it is 600W. The 1080 Ti has a higher power consumption with 250W. The 2070 Superpower consumption is 215W. While this is only a small difference it should be taken into consideration.

Dimensions

Here are the dimensions for each GPU:

2070 Super:

Height – 4.556”
Length – 10.5”
Width – 2-Slot

1080 Ti:

Height – 4.376 ”
Length – 11.7”
Width – 2-Slot

When you purchase a GPU, you will need to ensure that it will fit in your PC build. While all GPUs are of a similar size, they do vary. While they are both the same length, the 2070 Super is slightly larger overall. They both feature a 2-slot which is common for graphics cards.

Both of these GPU’s use a PCIe 3.0 x 14. While this interface is suitable, PCIe 4.0 has been released recently. When considering this, it is worth noting that eventually, these GPUs will become less futureproof.

Resolutions/FPS

The resolution and FPS are two of the most important specifications you will need to research.

The resolution is responsible for how clear your overall graphics are on screen. Both of these GPUs have 4K capabilities. The 1080 Ti was the first graphics card to run 4K (1440p) with no impact on gaming performance, which was a big leap for Nvidia.

We benchmarked both of these GPUs to see which performed better overall and during gameplay. While the 2070 Super had the better clock speeds overall, in gameplay the 1080 Ti was better.

The 1080 Ti was 16% faster when looking at the overall effective speed, which may surprise some. When looking at the average performance, the 1080 Ti performed 8% better overall. However, the 2070 Super did have a better MRender speed. It was 182 fps in comparison to the 1080 Ti’s 133 fps.

When overclocked, the 1080 Ti again was better overall. When looking at the gravity it performed at 197 fps, in comparison to the 2070 Super’s 141 fps. However, the MRender of the 2070 Super again was better than the 1080 Ti when overclocked. The 2070 Super is the best option to choose if you are planning on running multiple programs alongside gaming.

Taking a look at gameplay, the 2070 Super was 5% better which is not surprising given that it has the more recent architecture. When looking at WoW, it performed at 130 fps, in comparison to the 1080 ti, which performed at 117 fps.

Both are great in different areas for FPS. However, the 2070 Super is a slightly better GPU for in-game performance and multitasking.

Ray Tracing

Ray tracing is a fairly new feature and it is currently only available with the Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs. The RT cores in the GPU help to boost the shading and lighting on games. Overall, ray tracing provides more realistic gameplay.

If you play games such as Call of Duty, a GPU with ray tracing is certainly worth considering. As the 2070 Super is an RTX GPU it features ray tracing. The 1080 Ti does not. However, it still provides excellent graphics.

VRAM

Finally, you need to consider the VRAM of a GPU. To run games with no issues, the GPU will need to have at least 8GB of ram. If you are consistently playing games in 4K, more than 8GB would be even better.

The memory speed for the 2070 Super is 14Gbps, and for the 1080 Ti it is 11Gbps. While both speeds are more than capable of running games with issues, the 2070 Super does have a higher spec.

The standard memory configuration of these GPUs may be surprising. The 2070 Super runs using 8GB GDDR6, this is currently the best buffer. The 1080 ti operates using 11GB GDDR5. While GDDR5 is fairly outdated, it is still suitable currently as GDDR7 is yet to be released. The 1080 Ti also has a far better frame buffer memory.

Conclusion

To conclude, it is fairly difficult to choose between these GPUs as they both have their strengths and weaknesses. However, the 2070 Super is the better GPU overall. It is more future proof when looking at its architecture and buffer memory. It is also benchmarked higher than the 1080 Ti during gameplay and is better at multitasking.

For an older model of GPU, the 1080 Ti is still impressive. Its architecture is good and it did perform better than the 2070 Super overall when benchmarked at normal and overclocked speeds. However, its buffer memory is slightly outdated and it is not as future proof as to the 2070 Super.

Overall, if you are looking for futureproofing and better gameplay, the 2070 Super is the better option. However, it is the more expensive GPU. The 1080 Ti is the better option if you are shopping on a budget.
