Intel’s hybrid core architecture allows this CPU to remain power-efficient at idle or low-utilization workloads and deliver the performance promised on the label when it’s required to do so.
How does the Core i7-13700K pair with the RTX 4090?
The Core i7-13700K makes for an excellent pairing with the RTX 4090. In fact, this setup is one of your very best options if you’re looking to build a high-end gaming rig without spending more than you absolutely have to.
While the modern Core i9 processors feature better specs on paper, they don’t deliver all that much more performance than the 13700K in gaming. That’s because these processors are so strong that you will end up with a GPU bottleneck regardless of which one you go with.
So, if gaming is the only goal, the i7-13700K is a much more practical option than the 13900K and its standard and special edition variants. You get similar gaming performance at two-thirds the price.
When running very CPU-intensive titles at low resolution and uncapped framerates (not the most common gaming scenario, but we’ll consider it anyways), you’ll sometimes find that you’re CPU-bound. To be more specific, bound by single-thread performance/clock speed since the 16 cores and 24 threads boasted by the 13700K processor deliver a greater total processing capacity than any current game can fully utilize.
Because the 13700K is an unlockable, K edition processor, you can overclock it to raise its operating frequencies even further. Again, this won’t yield performance boosts in most games where you’re GPU-bound. But it will yield results in titles running at settings causing a CPU-bottleneck or multicore workloads that are able to utilize all of the processors.
The Core i7-13700K is a bit impractical to overclock, though, because of its high TDP at stock values. It already consumes a massive 253 watts of power at stock, all of which is converted to heat and has to be dissipated by your thermal solution. Overclocking will require your CPU power delivery and cooling setups to be up to par.
Final words
The Core i7-13700k is an excellent processor for the RTX 4090. It’s strong enough to have the RTX 4090 deliver full performance during gaming and is able to deal with multithreaded productivity workloads respectably well. Overall, a very solid processor for its price. Just keep in mind that it consumes a lot of power, runs hot, and needs you to have an excellent cooler.
