AMD released the 5800X3D into the world on April 20th, 2022, and with it, came a new advancement in CPU technology for AMD. The 5800X3D contained a new 3D V-cache, giving the CPU a significant edge in gaming workloads. But is there a CPU that can match it? What CPU is equivalent to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D?

Now read: What CPU is equivalent to the Core i9-13900K?

We’ll be looking at the 5800X3D and seeing if we can match up a CPU that may perform similarly, so you can get a sense of alternatives if you don’t fancy that particular CPU.

Update: AMD has announced the official release date of the Ryzen 7000 X3D seires. It will be on February 28th, 2023. Except for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which will release later, on April 6th, 2023.

As you can see, this CPU appears pretty normal until you notice the massive amount of cache it has. AMD’s aim was to increase performance in games by adding an additional cache to the CPU. But how does this work? And how does it improve performance?

How does CPU cache improve CPU performance in games?

CPU cache improves performance in games by reducing the number of times the CPU needs to access main memory. The cache is a small amount of fast memory that is built into the CPU, and it stores frequently accessed data from the main memory.

When the CPU needs to access this data, it can retrieve it from the cache instead of the main memory, which is much slower. This reduces the amount of time the CPU needs to spend waiting for data, which improves overall performance. In the context of games, this can mean faster load times and a more responsive game experience.

What is 3D V-cache?

AMD 3D V-Cache is a feature that provides additional cache memory to improve the performance of certain applications, such as gaming and content creation, that rely heavily on fast access to large amounts of data.

The V-Cache acts as a high-speed buffer between the processor and system memory, storing frequently used data and allowing the processor to access it much more quickly than it could from system memory. This can help reduce system latency and increase overall performance, especially in gaming scenarios, where cache matters.

What CPU is equivalent to the 5800X3D?

The CPU that we have deemed equivalent to the 5800X3D is the Core i5 13600K.

The CPU has some impressive specifications behind it, as does the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Finding an equivalent CPu to the 5800X3D is difficult because it excels in some areas but falls behind in others. The reason the 5800X3D is so good in games is because of the 3D V-cache, this artificial bump knocks it outside the realm of normal so we have to find an equivalent CPU based on two abnormal values.

The 13600K matches the gaming performance of the 5800X3D but has a much better multi-core performance. For starters, the 13600K has more cores, threads, and a higher CPU core speed at its disposal. If anything it’s a testament to just how well the 5800X3D performs in games, we need a CPU a generation ahead of the 5800X3D to keep up with gaming workloads.

You would have to consider a 13th-generation CPU to keep up with the X3D in terms of gaming, but we don’t need to travel too far away from the 5000 series Ryzen CPUs to find a CPU that outperforms it in multi-core workloads.

Final Word

The 5800X3D is a strange CPU, with inflated gaming performance and lowered synthetic and multi-core performance to compensate, we struggle to find the perfect match with the 5800X3D in terms of equivalency. But since we’re very game-focused here at WePC. We’ve gone for the gaming angle and recommended the 13600K for the equivalent CPu to the 5800X3D.
