Best 4070 laptops in 2024: reviews

A fantastic 17-inch laptop with Ryzen CPU

ASUS ROG Strix G17 (240Hz QHD, Ryzen 9 7845HX/7945HX)

ASUS ROG Strix G17

AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX / 7945HX

Graphics Card

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 / 4070 / 4080

RAM

16GB/32GB DDR5 RAM (4800MHz)

Storage

1TB SSD

Max Refresh Rate

Resolution

‎2560 x 1440

Pros
  • Ryzen CPU options are the most powerful laptop processors available
  • Great gaming performance from GPU & CPU
  • Great value for the power
  • Good color replication
Cons
  • Somewhat plastic build quality
  • only 16:9 aspect ratio

It’s important to distinguish the ASUS ROG Strix G17 from its more expensive ASUS ROG Strix SCAR counterpart – the SCAR variants are more expensive and for your money you get a slightly higher build quality, slightly better cooling, different aesthetic design and slightly better USB port coverage, however, for the money the non-SCAR variants are the better pick. This machine is the best pick on the market if you want to churn out high frame rates whilst gaming.

The G17 is, as the name would suggest, a 17-inch laptop designed with gaming in mind, though the 100% sRGB color replication of the display also makes it worthwhile for light color work, plus the high-powered components can demolish any rendering workload you throw at it.

There are two Ryzen CPU options you can pick: the Ryzen 9 7845HX or 9 7945HX, with the latter being the most powerful Ryzen 7000 series laptop CPU on the market, and indeed, the best laptop CPU currently available across any brand. Considering all this power, the G17 is pretty affordable, and one of the best value gaming laptops we’ve seen. The 240Hz 1440p display is plenty fast enough for competitive gaming as well as immersive single-player titles, plus it has decent response time to minimise ghosting.

While the build quality may have a slightly plasticky feel and the webcam might not be the best, these trade-offs are relatively minor. Ultimately, it’s quite rare to find a gaming laptop with such impressive power at such a reasonable price. Unless you specifically require a smaller and more portable option, we highly recommend considering this laptop if you have the opportunity.

A high performing 16-inch laptop with Intel CPU

ASUS ROG Strix G16 (240Hz 1600p, i9-13980HX)

ASUS ROG Strix G16 i9 13980HX

Max Refresh Rate

240Hz

Resolution

2560 x 1600

Pros
  • Very powerful Intel CPU
  • Great value for the power
  • Good color replication
Cons
  • Somewhat plastic build quality
  • Thermal throttling from Intel 13th gen CPU

If you’re more into Intel processors, this ASUS ROG Strix G16 comes equipped 13th gen Intel Core i9-13980HX CPU – basically the most high-end option available for the blue team. Combined with the RTX 4070 it makes a powerful combination – not quite as powerful as the most powerful Ryzen CPU, but not far off.

This 16-inch laptop is similar to the G17 above in most respects, so we won’t waste time listing its features again, however besides the processor there is one crucial difference: this laptop has a 16:10 display rather than the 16:9 screen of our top pick, which means you get a bit more vertical headroom and 2560 x 1600 – better for browsing the web, reading articles/documents and the like.

On the downside Intel 13th gen CPUs are a bit worse when it comes to thermal performance than those of the Red team this generation, so thermal throttling is more likely with this device, however you can counteract this somewhat with a laptop cooling pad or laptop stand.

The best portable 14-inch pick

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2023)

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 2023

CPU

AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS / 9 7940HS

RAM

16GB/32GB/64GB DDR5

Storage

512GB/1TB/2TB SSD

Screen Size

14.3″

Max Refresh Rate

165Hz

Pros
  • MUX Switch
  • great gaming performance for a smaller laptop
  • great response time
  • 16:10 screen gives more vertical space
  • great color replication
  • superb peak brightness
  • great trackpad
  • good battery life
  • good array of ports, including MicroSD slot
  • decent speakers
  • light and portable
  • looks great
Cons
  • keyboard build quality and backlighting could be improved
  • no ethernet caps your internet to 1Gpbs
  • difficult to navigate onboard software

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 consistently manages to make it into our best gaming laptop picks for the year, specifically for the 14-inch category, and the 2023 version is no exception.

The laptop has all the benefits of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 2022 model we reviewed, but now comes with a higher maximum refresh rate of 165Hz, the latest AMD Ryzen 7000 series laptop CPUs, Nvidia 40-series GPUs, and other minor improvements. For a comprehensive understanding of the laptop’s features, we suggest referring to our review of the previous model, but in brief it has a nice bright 16:10 screen with great color replication and response time, a good array of ports for such a small machine (including a MicroSD reader), and even the speakers are pretty respectable (not common for a gaming laptop).

The AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPU options include less powerful variants (either the Ryzen 7 7735HS or 9 7940HS) than those in our top pick, but combined an RTX 4070 graphics card they still perform admirably, particularly for the asking price. All-told this is excellent upper mid-range, mobile gaming laptop that can also serve as a versatile creative workstation.

Best budget RTX 4070 laptop

Acer Nitro 16 (165Hz 1600p, Ryzen 9 7940HS)

Acer Nitro 16

CPU

AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS

Graphics Card

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 / 4060 / 4070

RAM

16GB LPDDR5

Storage

512GB – 1TB SSD

Max Refresh Rate

165Hz

Resolution

2560 x 1600)

Pros
  • Good performance for a budget laptop
  • Decent build quality for a cheap machine
  • 165Hz 1600p display
  • 16GB DDR5 RAM & 1TBGB SSD
  • Respectable contrast
Cons
  • Screen could be brighter
  • Battery life could be better

The Acer Nitro 16 is the latest version of the long-running Acer Nitro series (no longer called Acer Nitro 5), and this 16-inch RTX 4070 laptop paired with AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS CPU is the best budget option currently available on the market.

Although there are cheaper options for RTX 4070 laptops that you can find online, such as the MSI Katana 15 B12VGK, sometimes the sacrifice of quality becomes too great to be worth the price, and the performance of that laptop in particular in both the low brightness and color replication of its (only 1080p) screen, plus inferior performance of its core components in games etc. means we’d avoid it if we were you.

For such a cheap laptop the RTX 4070 in the Nitro 16 has a decent TGP, and paired with the Ryzen 9 7940HS it performs solidly. The 165Hz 1600p screen is pretty good for a budget machine, and though the brightness, color replication, and response time are all below the other picks on this list, there as good as you’re likely to get for this cheap with these core specs.

Although the battery life only lasts around 4 hours in energy saving mode, the overall build quality of the Nitro 16 is pretty solid for a cheaper machine. All-in-all, another nice little budget entry from the Acer Nitro series.

The Nvidia RTX 4070 laptop series release date

Nvidia revealed that the RTX 4070 laptop release date was the 22nd of February, 2023 which is when the first laptops hit the shelves. More will be cropping up throughout the year as it goes on.

The delivery date for pre-orders was on this same date.

RTX 4070 laptop performance

We have yet to do extensive testing and benchmarking of RTX 4070 laptops ourselves yet, so we recommend you take a gander at what Aussie laptop lover Jarrod’s Tech has to say on the subject, as he compares the RTX 4070 against the RTX 3070 Ti.

RTX 4070 laptop vs RTX 3070 laptop performance & specs

Known leaker Mechrevo came out with some hot graphs which show the performance of the RTX 4070 laptop GPU compared to the previous gen RTX 3070 laptop on synthetic benchmarking applications 3DMark Time Spy and 3DMark Fire Strike. Time Spy is the newer test that utilises DirectX 12 and renders in 1440p, whereas Fire Strike is DX11 based and renders out in 1080p.

These tests obviously aren’t the same as in-game FPS benchmarks, but they can give us a good idea of the relative performance, and the results are considerably less impressive than the projected performance improvements of the RTX 4060 laptop GPU compared to its predecessor, which echoes disappointments levelled at the RTX 4070 desktop variant. 11% – 15% improvement isn’t really worth several hundred dollars more in asking price, particularly when many RTX 3070 laptops are experiencing price-drops.

Still, the performance below doesn’t count the additional boosts in gaming that you should receive courtesy of DLSS 3.0 (at least in those titles that support it), which may make it worth the increased asking price compared to the RTX 3070 laptop series (though we’ll have to wait for independent benchmarking to confirm).

RTX 4070 laptop vs RTX 3070 laptop benchmark

As you can see below, the newer GPU actually has less CUDA cores and a smaller memory bus than its predecessor, with the gains it does have in clock speed being the result of the new Ada Lovelace architecture it’s based on, which enables it to still outperform despite having a lower TGP.

RTX 4070 laptop vs RTX 3070 desktop specs

Looking at the below specs, we can see (unsurprisingly) that there are even more CUDA cores in the RTX 3070 desktop variant compared to the RTX 4070 laptop GPU, the same larger 256-bit memory bus as was in the RTX 3070 mobile, but though the clock speed is greater than the previous-gen mobile variant, it still falls short of the new RTX 4070 laptop GPU.

We haven’t seen any actual benchmarks yet to judge the comparable performance of these, however we do know that the RTX 3070 desktops can outperform their laptop variants by 20-40%, which might mean (if we extrapolate out the leaked benchmark graphs above) they still outperform the RTX 4070 laptop GPUs by 5-25% (excluding DLSS 3.0). Time will tell whether this holds up as accurate.

RTX 4070 laptop vs RTX 4070 desktop specs

As with every desktop variant, it’s very likely the RTX 4070 will eclipse the RTX 4070 laptop GPU by some margin. You can see the comparison of the specs below.
