The XMG Neo 16 E23 / Eluktronics MECH 16 GP2 is guaranteed to have the most high-TGP (and therefore powerful) RTX 4060 GPU of any gaming laptop you’ll find, along with the obligatory MUX Switch and now Advanced Optimus giving you additional performance boosting. These companies specialise in providing highly-tuned gaming machines with great customization on extra features.

XMG / Eluktronics are brands which pretty much sell the same laptop, the former in Europe and other regions, the latter in North American markets, and on the XMG site for instance you can customize your XMG Neo 16 with whatever RTX 40-series graphics card you want, plus different RAM options going up to 64GB and SSD options going up to 4TB (with different speed/brand options for both available). All options however come with the hugely powerful Intel Core i9-13900HX processor – near the top of the line of the Intel 13th gen laptop range.

You also get the option for a Cherry MX ULP tactile switch keyboard, though both the standard membrane keyboard and trackpad are of great quality. Build quality overall is great, though the utilitarian aesthetics may not appeal for those looking for something prettier. Although we haven’t tested the speakers on this model yet, XMG speakers tend to be poor even by gaming laptop standards, though for most gamers using headphones this won’t be a problem.

The 16-inch 240Hz 1600p IPS screen comes with G-Sync – ideal for gaming at both the competitive level and in single-player immersive titles. It only comes with 95% sRGB gamut coverage, but this is quite enough for most gamers.

The main premium alternative to this RTX 4060 laptop is the new Razer Blade 16, which comes with the option of an even more powerful (though not by much) i9-13950HX CPU, a thinner and lighter chassis and a brighter, more colorful screen. However for several hundred dollars more and a less powerful variant of the RTX 4060 graphics card, plus less options for customization, we don’t think the Razer laptop is worth it by comparison to the Neo/Mech 16 on balance, unless you need greater color-accuracy for creative work.

Although we haven’t yet had a hands on review of the latest G14 from 2023, it’s essentially very similar to the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2022) that we reviewed last year, but with a higher maximum refresh rate (now 165Hz) plus the latest AMD Ryzen 7000 series laptop CPUs and Nvidia 40-series GPUs plus some other minor improvements. The ASUS ROG Strix G16 is another solid entry from one of the best gaming laptop brands on the market. This RTX 4060 laptop comes with an Intel Core i7-13650HX processor, 16GB of DDR5 RAM, and a 512GB SSD – which will see you right in most of the latest games at medium-high settings (although a bit more SSD space would have been preferable).

It’s a nice looking machine, with the additional ‘gamer’ details of the Strix sub-brand, but nothing so outlandish you won’t be able to use it in an office environment. The laptop incorporates the Tri-fan cooling system developed in the laptops from last year, including the ASUS ROG Flow X16, leading to reduced thermal throttling in games.

The 16:10 display gives you extra headroom – meaning not only better immersion in games but also greater utility for working/reading web-pages. Although a higher resolution display would have been nice, it still does alright at a 16-inch screen size, and the reasonable pricing makes up for it.

Build quality is solid, like most ASUS machines, although not quite up there with the more metallic premium selections. Although the onboard software can be a bit of a mess to navigate at times, it does give you good granular control over various voltage and fan speed features.

You won’t find a cheaper price on an RTX 4060 laptop than with the MSI Cyborg 15, a new entry into the MSI gaming laptop range. Whilst it’s the least powerful machine on this page, with the lowest TGP graphics card and least powerful CPU, for device this affordable it’s remarkably good.

One of the reasons it’s so cheap is that it comes with an older Intel 12th gen laptop CPU, the Intel Core i7-12650H, but this is still a powerful performer for this price point, certainly good enough to handle the latest games on medium-high settings. At this price you only get a 512GB SSD and 8GB of memory but it is DDR5 RAM, and you can always upgrade your laptop RAM to 16GB later. As both of these products can be more easily upgraded than the CPU, we think the Cyborg is a better deal for most people, than the MSI Katana with RTX 4060, which has a 1TB SSD and 16GB of DDR5 memory, but only comes with an Intel Core i5-12450H processor.

The display won’t set the world on fire in terms of color replication, peak brightness, and contrast ratio, so if you want something more capable of creative/visual workflows besides gaming, probably look elsewhere, but for just gaming when indoors it’s plenty good enough. The 144Hz maximum refresh rate is all most people will need, unless they’re interested in high-end competitive gaming in fast FPS shooters, in which case you’d probably want an RTX 4070 laptop or above in any case.

Build quality is okay for a laptop this cheap, the trackpad and keyboard are respectable, and the whole thing comes with an unusual translucent design on the bottom of the chassis.

RTX 4060 laptop release date

We had official confirmation from Nvidia themselves that the 22nd of February, 2023 was the RTX 4060 laptop release date, at least for the earliest models that are coming out, which includes the new Razer Blades, MSI Cyborg, and myriad other MSI, Acer, and ASUS laptops. The rest of the line from other brands came out throughout the year.

Are RTX 4060 laptops any good? RTX 4060 laptop vs RTX 3060 laptop

Below is a table of the specifications of the RTX 4060 mobile/laptop series, against its previous-gen equivalent. As you can see, the RTX 3060 laptop variant actually has more CUDA Cores and a larger memory bus than the RTX 4060 mobile, along with a great TGP, which is the opposite of what you’d expect.

However, the architectural improvements mean that the clock speed of the RTX 4060 is still substantially larger, meaning greater performance at lower power draw.

RTX 4060 laptop performance benchmarks

The first RTX 4060 laptop benchmark came courtesy of Chinese YouTuber 中正评测 who has apparently tested a Raytheon Zero laptop equipped with RTX 4060 graphics card and Intel Core i9-13900HX CPU in various benchmarks. This is the first we saw of any independent benchmarking for the mobile GPU, and though we can’t guarantee it’s genuine, the results seem to match up to what we’d expect.

You were previously able to view said YouTuber’s various game benchmarking graphs in the video on his channel, but he appears to have took one in the neck from Nvidia, or voluntarily removed the video, as it is no longer uploaded. However you can see below for screengrabs we took of the comparative performance graphs that came courtesy of the aforementioned Chinese leaker. These are written in Mandarin but in order they start with the 3DMark Time Spy scores, then 1080p Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, 1080p Shadow of Tomb Raider, 1440p Forza Horizon 5, 1080p CS:GO, 1440p Cyberpunk 2077 (with DLSS/FSR enabled), and 1440p Red Dead Redemption 2.

The graphs show both a laptop RTX 3060 and often a desktop RTX 3060 (identified by the 12G), and it seems that the new mobile GPU not only bests the former but also the latter, which is pretty good for a laptop graphics card.

The specific performance takeaways from each graph are as follows:

• 3Dmark (synthetic benchmark): 23% outperformance of the RTX 4060 laptop GPU vs RTX 3060 laptop GPU (desktop not tested).

The specifications of both the RTX 4060 laptop and RTX 3060 desktop show that the latter still has the edge when it comes to VRAM and CUDA Cores, however the faster clock speed lies with the RTX 4060 mobile. The desktop variant of the RTX 4060 will outperform the laptop version without a shadow of a doubt, the only question is, by how much?

We haven’t yet got any comparative performance data to make this assessment, however below you can see what we know about the specifications of both.

With more than 33% more CUDA cores, but still being based on the same, new, more efficient architecture as the laptop variant, it looks like we can definitely expect some headroom between the two.

Note that the lower-numbered GPU codenames are actually the more powerful (e.g. the AD102 in the desktop RTX 4090 being the most powerful, with the AD102 GPU in the RTX 4090 laptop variant being less so).
