The refresh rate arms race is in full swing, with gaming display manufacturers duking it out in order to see who is able to achieve the highest refresh rates in the industry. You may never have heard of BOE, which fabricates display panels for the likes of Samsung and Apple. But, they’re the largest display manufacturer in China. Their displays are featured in all manner of places, from Smartphones, to home appliances. Now, they’ve unveiled their latest innovation in display technologies, as reported by Sina.
The main thing that we’ll be focussing on is the announcement of their brand-new gaming monitor panel, which boasts an FHD 1920 x 1080 resolution, 27-inches of screen real-estate, and finally, a staggering 500Hz+ refresh rate. Currently, our resident monitor experts at WePC believe that our current commercially available monitor refresh rates top out at around 390Hz. With reports of a 480Hz panel last year, it appears that the boundaries have finally been pushed forwards once more.

Is this the fastest gaming monitor refresh rate?
Make no mistake, we’ve found that there are several incredibly speedy gaming monitors, but the BOE gaming panel is currently poised to be the fastest gaming monitor refresh rate that we’ve ever seen. However, BOE don’t usually sell products straight to consumers. Instead, they’ll sell the technology and ‘whitelabel’ it. Whitelabelling is a process in which a company creates a product, and then sells it to another business, and lets them brand the product in whatever fancy clothes they like. This helps keep costs low for each place wanting to whitelabel a product, as they do not have to develop it themselves. It’s the reason why there are so many similar products available in the gaming monitor space because the process whitelabelling is so prevalent.
It makes innovation difficult unless you have the capacity to create and invest in R&D heavily. Some companies do this, and others do not. Regardless, we’re incredibly excited to see these panels come to market, regardless of whatever brand they might be attached to.
