The Far Cry series is a staple in modern first-person shooter video games. With its first game being 17 years old (released in 2004), the latest addition to the series is set to release on October 7th 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X and PC.

On first glance, Far Cry 6 doesn’t look quite so different from the other Far Cry games. Taking place on tropical paradise far from most civilization, Yara is the game’s main location. A turn from the a fictional region of Montana, Hope County – United States, our setting in Far Cry 5.

When is Far Cry 6 released?

Far Cry 6 Release Date is October 7th 2021.

Gameplay Overview

The player tales on the mantle of Dani Rojas, the game’s protagonist. Players have the option to play either a male or female version of the character. This comes as a change from the previous games, where players play an established character. This welcome change shows that gender does not have to affect the story and in this case, serves more as a means for players to feel as though they’re part of the game.

As narrative director and lead writer Navid Khavari says: “In terms of Dani, what we wanted to do was explore a character that is fully voiced, fully performance captured and you can play as both male and female. We also wanted a character that was born and raised on the island of Yara, is a local, and someone who didn’t necessarily see themselves as part of a revolution or an uprising, but who gets swept up in the Libertad movement.”

Far Cry 6 Dani

Much like all the other Far Cry games, 6 is no different in terms of gameplay. Characters are in the eyes of Dani Rojas and play through the game in first person. Nonetheless, cutscenes seem to be quite common in the game, where we can see Dani interact with the world around them and others with them. Dani is fully voiced by either Nisa Gunduz or Sean Rey depending on chosen gender.

Donning little to no armour also means a welcome return to our protagonist performing some questionable first-aid. Far Cry 6 continues to indulge in its suspension of disbelief, as we’ve seen from gameplay footage, we have a new best friend waiting for us.

Guapo and Amigos

Far Cry 6 Guapo

Guapo the crocodile is a pet of guerrilla mentor Juan Cortez who players can sic on enemies via whistles.

We can assume that Guapo is a Cuban Crocodile, which would account for his ability to be particularly terrestrial for a crocodile. He would have to be if the player is going to sic him on the unsuspecting enemies of the game!

Fun Fact: Guapo means handsome in spanish!

But good news to all our animal-petting gamers, Far Cry 6 seems to be promising us even more animal companions we can use in the game. Each comes with a core ability and unique skills to unlock! From a recent gameplay walkthrough, we can see Chorizo, Chicharron, Boom Boom are only some of the Amigos waiting for us.

Workbench and Crafting

Crafting has been an important part of the Far Cry series since Far Cry 3. Since then, it seems that players will continue to have the ability to craft weapons, tools and upgrade them further.

Crafting thankfully adds a different aspect to the game, one in which players can utilise the world around them. Hunting, scavenging and foraging can help players make up for low supplies or weak weapons.

As soon as the players have access to the workbench, they’ll be able to modify their weapons with attachments and upgrades.

Vehicles and Transport

Those familiar with the Far Cry series will know just how easy it is to get your hands on a car, moped or vehicle and race through the tropical jungles. Far Cry 6 is no different, in fact, if you’re more keen on a stealthier approach to your game, players can ride horseback. Players can hijack civilian cars and get around much quicker but this would be sure to attract unwanted attention!

The User Interface

A small detail which can often make all the difference for some players is the UI. Far Cry 6’s UI seems to retain the core from its previous games. Things are kept simple and clean, and even on console players or controller players, it seems to operate with a cursor. With the conventional journal, map, weapons, inventory and system, we’re glad to see no needless complications added.

What is Far Cry 6’s Story?

In terms of Far Cry 6’s story, we’re still mostly in the dark. What we do know is that the players will be fighting in a revolution against Antón Castillo, Yara’s dictator. As Ubisoft tells Game Informer: ““Decades of economic sanctions have devastated the nation, leaving it impoverished and divided.”

A History of Charming Antagonists

As with all Far Cry games, players are far more interested in the antagonist. From Far Cry 3’s Vaas Montenegro to Far Cry 5’s radical cult leader Joseph Seed, the series has rarely disappointed fans with their brilliantly eccentric villains. As such, there’s no surprise that people are excited to see Giancarlo Esposito playing this game’s main antagonist, Antón Castillo. And although Far Cry 6 is Giancarlo’s first step into game acting, fans are supportive and excited to see him in action.

Antón, Diego, and Dani

While we play and experience the world through Dani‘s eyes, promo and trailers have set Anton and his son Diego at the centre of this game. This does beg the question: how does Dani – and the player – fit into this story?

In response to this, Khavari told Game Informer:

“That triangle of characters between Antón, Diego, and Dani is absolutely crucial. What I can say is that with Diego what we found really interesting was this idea of this is a 13-year-old teenager. I think a lot of folks can remember what it was like being 13, at least I do. It’s hard enough to figure out who you are and what you’re gonna do in this world and what does it all mean? But try doing that while also being the son of a dictator who is running a country.

We really wanted to create a character in Diego that is riding a razor’s edge – that you don’t know exactly where he’s going to land. Is he going to follow in his father’s footsteps? Is he going to be a brutal dictator himself? Or is he going to forge his own journey, his own path? So I’m excited to see what players think of that.”

At the core of this game seems to lie a great deal of emphasis on character. Antón, Diego, and Dani will be some of the franchise’s most interesting characters from what little we already know!
