To coincide with the launch of the highly anticipated F1 2020 game tomorrow, Codemasters has released a beginner’s guide video. This should help new players and those looking for a refresh to get up to speed before loading the game.
This year’s F1 game has included lots of new and improved features to get to grips with. The new video is the first in a series to help new players learn the ropes and includes tips on mastering the new handling mode, how to overtake, and tips for racing in the rain.

Choose a Race Style
For the first time in the F1 games, you will get a choice of race style. This is designed to ensure that everyone enjoys F1 – newbies and veterans alike.
If you’re just getting started with F1, the new Casual Race Style is ideal. It helps you learn all the techniques of navigating the tracks and handling your car. You’ll be able to toggle a number of different settings including Braking Assist, Anti-Lock Brakes, Traction Control, Gearbox type, ERS Assist and more.
In this race style, off-track surfaces are much easier to drive over and won’t result in you spinning out as often. If you do end up off the track, there’s a handy Reset to Track feature which helps you get back to where you were before.
Another new element is the Steering Assist function. This gently guides you towards the ideal racing line as you drive and will help you correct any mistakes as you go.
After you become comfortable with F1, you can disable some of the Assists to keep challenging yourself. If you feel ready to move onto the next level, you can switch to the Standard Race Style which provides a more realistic racing experience.
Learning a New Track
Learning how to navigate a brand new track can be tricky at the best of times. You’ll want to make use of the practice sessions to get the most out of your car.
During Free Practice, you have access to a number of different challenges. The best place to start is with the Track Acclimatisation program. This guides you through the track layout, racing line, DRS zones and ideal braking points.
Once you’ve loaded this program, you’ll see that there are a series of gates that show up at the entry, apex, and exit of every turn. These gates will light up green if you pass through them or purple if you pass through them perfectly.
How to Overtake
Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to add in a bit of competitive racing. This is the most exciting part of Formula 1 but it can be risky and difficult to overtake other cars.
The first thing to remember is that overtaking is best done on the straight parts of the track because that gives you a chance to build up more speed than your rival.
As you gain more confidence, you can start overtaking just before the bends, taking advantage of your opponent’s need to slow down for the turn. To do this, get towards the inside lane before the braking zone and then brake slightly later than your rival to overtake.
In the beginner’s video, you’re also introduced to DRS. DRS increases your top speed by opening a flap on your rear wing when you’re within a second of another driver through one of the set DRS zones. This can give you the boost you need to overtake and put some distance between you and the other car.
Another feature to help you out is the Overtake button – a simplification of the ERS system found in last year’s game. This can come in handy if you’re struggling to get past another car. But be warned, using this consistently will drain your car’s battery. With no juice, you won’t be overtaking anyone in a hurry so use it wisely.
Racing in the Rain
One of the biggest challenges in Formula 1 racing is wet-weather racing. This is something even the top F1 drivers in the world struggle with. During wet-weather racing, your visibility is impaired and it’s much easier to lose control of the car due to the standing water on the track.
The main strategy is to brake earlier and as smoothly as possible – like regular driving really. If you’re struggling, you can always turn on Traction Control and Anti-Lock Brakes Assists.
