We are saddened to learn of the passing of terrific actor Michael K Williams, known to gamers for his role as Irish in Battlefield 4 and in the upcoming Battlefield 2042. Considering Irish was to be a central character in Battlefield 2042’s evolving story, what now for the game’s plot?

Michael K Williams Career

Michael K Williams was born in Brooklyn in New York City and became involved in theatre and dance as a young man, in part to stay out of trouble. The scar which he acquired across his face after being slashed with a razor in a bar fight aged 25, actually became one of his stand-out features, and helped him land acting roles playing ‘thug’ characters and even modeling gigs. Williams also featured in several music videos as a dancer, and went on tour with Kym Sims, George Michael, and Madonna.

Although his voice acting roles and Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 2042 is perhaps what many younger readers will know Michael K Williams for, his most acclaimed work was as Omar Little in The Wire, as a charming, streetwise, gay man who earned his money robbing drug dealers at gunpoint (the favorite character of many in arguably one of the greatest TV shows of all time).

Following The Wire, Mr. Williams portrayed iconic characters such as Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire, as well as brief but memorable turns in The Road and 12 Years A Slave.

Michael K Williams Cause Of Death

Several US media outlets have quoted law enforcement sources as saying the suspected cause of death for Mr. Williams is drug overdose. Although Michael K Williams was open about his struggles with drug use in the past, it is important to note that the cause of his death has not yet been confirmed, so this currently remains speculation. Mr. Williams passed away at the age of 54 at his home in Brooklyn.

Irish Battlefield 2042 - What Now?

Michael K William’s Irish was set to be one of the main characters in the ongoing narrative of Battlefield 2042.

Although much of the voice work and motion capture for the game will already have been completed, the fact that Battlefield 2042 was to have a continuing, unfolding plot serving as the backdrop to the multiplayer game means that it’s likely DICE expected to be able to call on Mr Williams for further work in the future.

We imagine this will mean Battlefield 2042 takes something of a narrative shift, with Irish either taking a back seat or being killed off. However DICE choose to do it, we hope they manage to do so tastefully, with respect to a man with such great talent.
