It’s quite the emotional day for Nintendo fans. Starting on March 27th, 2023, you will no longer be able to make purchases on Nintendo eShop for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Additionally, you will not be able to download any free content, including game demos. As we approach this date, related services will also cease to function.

What should you do now the Nintendo eShop is closing

If you use a Nintendo eShop Card, you will not be able to add funds to your account on Nintendo eShop for Wii U or Nintendo 3DS after August 29th, 2022. However, you can still redeem download codes until March 27th, 2023.

Therefore, we recommend that you use any funds you have in your Nintendo 3DS and/or Wii U Nintendo eShop balance before March 27th, 2023, when the ability to purchase content ends.

If you link your Nintendo Network ID funds with the funds tied to your Nintendo Account, you can use the shared funds to purchase content on any of these consoles and systems until March 27th, 2023. After that, you can only use the funds to purchase content on Nintendo Switch.

No changes are planned on Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch.

What will happen when the Nintendo eShop closes?

When the changes on Nintendo eShop for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS take effect, they will also apply to software on these platforms where you can make purchases, such as StreetPass Mii Plaza, the Theme Shop, and Nintendo Badge Arcade.

Even after March 27th, 2023, you will still be able to redownload games and DLC, receive software updates, and enjoy online play on Wii U consoles and Nintendo 3DS systems.

If you weren’t aware already, sales of Fire Emblem Fates ended one month earlier, on February 28th, 2023. However, DLC for Fire Emblem Fates, including story paths accessible after the completion of Chapter 6, will still be available until March 27th, 2023.

Nintendo sign off their official statement by saying: “We thank you for supporting Nintendo eShop for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. While we hope that you will continue to enjoy using these platforms, we have taken this opportunity to prepare a website where you can look back on your time with them via various play statistics.
