The Nintendo eShop closes today ! March 27th 2023 at 20:00 ET. In other time zones, this is 0:00 GMT and 17:00 PT. So, if you haven’t purchased any games that you’ve been planning on playing, you best get a move on.
This isn’t a surprise, however, as Nintendo announced the closure of the eShop way back in July of 2022. However, we understand that time flies when you’re having fun, so this date will have snuck up on people.
So, now we know what time the Nintendo eShop closes for the 3DS and Wii U, what happens to the games you’ve been buying all these years? They don’t just disappear do they? leaving you up a warp pipe without a princess? Surely not.
What happens to the games I already bought on the eShop?
Don’t worry, dear reader. Nintendo has confirmed that you’ll still be able to download any games that you’ve bought leading up to the date of closure.
So, we’d recommend making a big bulk purchase of any games that you’ll be wanting to play for the foreseeable. Getting this purchase in before the Nintendo eShop closes will ensure that you can download them at a later date.
Remember, Today is only the end of you being able to buy games from the eShop, being able to download them is expected to be fine for the foreseeable future. In fact, according to Nintendo Themselves, here is what you’ll be able to do after today:
- Redownload content they own
- Download existing software updates
- Purchase any content
- On Nintendo 3DS systems, this includes paid content, plays and passes in software such as StreetPass Mii Plaza, the Theme Shop, Nintendo Badge Arcade and Pokémon Bank.
- On Wii U consoles, this includes passes in software such as Wii Sports Club.
- Download demos
- Download free-to-start software
- Redeem download codes
- Add funds to their Nintendo eShop balance
- Download a small number of free themes from the Theme Shop

Will I still be able to download the games I’ve already bought?
Yes. You’ll still be able to redownload games you’ve already paid for. You just won’t be able to buy any games after today.
