These days, most gamers have awoken from the cheap, back-breaking chairs that plague the market and find themselves searching for the best gaming chair instead. As of 2022, there has never been a better selection of both racing-style gaming chairs and ergonomic office-type chairs. While many swear by the highly comfortable ergo chairs, they do come with a hefty price tag and this is where ‘gaming chairs’ come into the equation.

The debate goes back and forth but there is no question that high-end ergonomic office-style chairs are the kings of comfort and support. Gaming chairs have come on leaps and bounds though and if you find the right one, you may be surprised how comfortable and functional these shunned seats have become.

Regardless of which type of chair you opt for it always boils down to comfort, ergonomics, adjustability, materials, and lumbar support. Sure price comes into it but the more expensive the chair, the greater the investment. We will touch upon all this in more detail further on in our guide but for now, let’s take a look at the best gaming chairs.

Best Gaming Chair: things to consider

So, what exactly are the features that make a good gaming chair? Well, as we discussed there are several but the most important of all is ergonomic design. Ergonomics is a science, looking at how objects interact with us, bringing support, helping with posture, and being a major factor in comfort and our health in general.

What makes a gaming chair ergonomic?

Regardless of the type, ergonomics give a chair real support, improving posture while also making it a more comfortable experience for longer. Many users swear by ergonomic chairs and consider them a worthwhile investment, preventing back issues in the process.

How should you sit in a chair?

Chair Egonomics
  1. While sitting about arm’s length from the monitor, you are going to want to adjust it so that the top of the monitor sits level with your eyes.
  2. Sit up straight, with your back pressed firmly against the backrest and your neck in a relaxed, neutral position.
  3. Recline your chair slightly so it sits at around 100-110 degrees, but make sure your back and neck are still making contact with the chair.
  4. Sit with your thighs horizontal so that your knees bend at a 90-degree angle.
  5. Sit with both feet planted on the floor flat, avoiding crossing your legs to ensure that blood circulation flows properly. If you still struggle to do this with the chair as close to the floor as possible, consider a footrest.

Ergonomics & back health

Some may consider the purchase of a gaming chair a pointless frivolity, but it turns out that they are designed with extensive ergonomic research in mind. This means that they really do have some health benefits.

There is no better time for a decently ergonomic seating solution as 7.5% of the world’s population suffers from back pain. This surprising statistic is due to the increasingly sedentary lifestyle experienced by most people, especially in first-world countries, for example, 86% of Americans work at a desk for a living.

This combined with ergonomically insufficient chairs and a general lack of exercise leads to huge potential for negative health effects.

Many office workers feel a tendency to hunch or slouch which disrupts the ideal natural curvature of the spine. Many gaming chairs have dense and supportive lumbar pillows to encourage your spine into the correct position.

Alongside the alleviation of back pain, this even helps with your breathing. When you’re slouching or hunching over, your diaphragm is prevented from descending fully, this means your lungs can’t inflate to the same extent as they do standing up.

Sitting with a proper posture can increase the amount of oxygen taken in by the body by up to 30%. This shocking statistic does make sense, however, as the ideal seating posture mirrors that of a standing pose, which is unsurprising given that humans didn’t exactly evolve to be sat in chairs for upwards of 10 hours a day.

For those of you already suffering from back pain, you might find our ‘Best office chair for back pain‘ page handy.

Support

Headrest pillows and lumbar support for the lower back are the most common support features found on gaming chairs, sadly with a large variety of quality and functionality.

At the very least you want a chair that supports your body naturally, however, where it doesn’t, memory foam lumbar cushions are a nice alternative. This also prevents and reduces your back pain, which greatly improves your mental focus and your performance in-game.

Comfort

Gaming chairs are designed to provide the utmost comfort when sitting for long hours. Material quality may give you an idea of how it feels when you sit on it, but there’s often a large difference between two chairs that use the same materials. Most chairs are either PU leatherfabric, or mesh, giving users of all needs and climates the perfect option.

Adjustability

If you always find it hard to get comfortable then you might have a unique set of requirements, if this is the case then fear not, the mid to higher-end gaming chairs now offer a whole plethora of cool features and functionality:

Noblechairs HERO TX Series 3
  • Seat height adjustment
  • Adjustable armrests
  • Adjustable lumbar support
  • Tilt adjustment
  • Recline adjustment
  • Back height adjustment

What are 4D armrests?

As you might have already figured out, there’s a ludicrously high amount of snake oil in the marketing of gaming chairs. ‘4D armrests’ are a great example of this and for some reason, this phrase appears almost ubiquitously in marketing material for gaming chairs, regardless of brand or price. So what does it mean?

Essentially it just means you can adjust the armrests in four distinct ways. In most cases, they are up/down, forward/backward, side to side, and angle relative to the chair.

This might sound needless, but there is science to back up the utility of 4D armrests. A study reported in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science showed that “The forearm support reduced upper trapezius and anterior deltoid muscular activity bilaterally, for all upper arm angles.” For laymen, this means that your muscles are less constantly activated, which results in less strain.

Surprisingly, our secondary research has backed up the validity of 4D armrests, showing that they do help enforce a healthy sitting posture. However, there is still no consensus that the four different types of adjustment are important.

Up and down adjustment contributes to a healthy posture, but the rest may indeed be superfluous. Regardless, it’s nice to have more personalization, but it’s by no means crucial.

Just keep in mind: The more of these features you get, the more expensive the chair will end up being.

Reclining gaming chair

As you can see from above, reclining gaming chairs are nothing new, in fact, it’s one of several common features we now see. The idea is to give those who spend a lot of time at the computer a few different options on how they enjoy entertainment. We no longer have to force ourselves into a rigid stiff chair, we can recline it, relax and watch something.

SecretLab 2022 Titan 23

Reclining in the gaming chair market isn’t really important if you think about it but more options are always nice-to-have, as long as they provide something functional too.

Durability

A good gaming chair should be made of durable materials. No one wants to buy a gaming chair only to need to replace it within the next 3 months or so. Typically, you would want the frame to be made of strong, long-lasting materials like steel.

As for the padding, armrests, and body of the seat, you should look for materials such as, but not limited to:

  • Cold cured foam
  • Memory foam
  • Polyurethane

Compatibility

Aside from being compatible with a console setup or a PC setup, there are gaming chairs that are compatible with other devices, such as:

  • Steering wheels
  • Keyboard stand
  • Flight simulation pack
  • Monitor stands/mounts

Generally, these input devices let the user experience their games in new ways but require obtuse sitting arrangements. Because both chairs and these devices are expensive, it is vital that you take your time to understand the compatibility you are looking for.

What size gaming chair is right for you?

Ergonomics and features aside, it is important you pick the right size gaming chair for your build. Support for different weights and heights vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so take the image below with a pinch of salt.

As we discussed earlier, it is key for your overall support and health that you can reach the floor with your feet but if not, you should consider a footrest.

Chair Size w logo

Does every gaming chair fit every body type?

No. Generally speaking the median height and weight are the most catered for, with people on the smaller and larger ends of the spectrum less so.

However, many gaming chair companies provide different sizes of any given chair, this helps increase compatibility with the end-user, and many have size guides on their website to help you pick.

Luckily the max weight load is always listed on a gaming chair’s spec list, and they build in a significant margin of error, so as long as you fit within the specs, you’ll most likely be fine.

The best advice is to go to a brick-and-mortar store and try them out for yourself. If you’re lucky enough to live within practical travel distance to a Micro center, they have a broad variety available for you to try out in-store.

Are gaming chairs worth it?

The truth of the matter is that a lot of gaming chairs are simply just marketing waffle. When searching online for the best gaming chair, you start to become overwhelmed with poor-quality, overpriced options but that isn’t to say all gaming chairs aren’t worth it.

Even when we exclude the likes of Herman Miller or Steelcase chairs, there are a couple of diamonds in the rough, offering good levels of build quality, ergonomics, adjustability, and comfort.

The main selling point behind a gaming chair becomes its affordability, with a lot of premium ergo-chairs being $700-$1,500 in price. Expensive Chairs from companies such as Herman Miller are really an investment, with extensive warranties, and tremendous re-sell value, however, most of us simply don’t have the money to spend on such a lavish chair.

Buying second-hand is always a great option many never consider, as mentioned, premium chairs hold their value and last a long time, so it is always worth checking for a pre-owned model if you are in need of something highly ergonomic.

How much does a gaming chair cost?

The short answer is that it depends. The more features, the higher quality, and the reputation of the brand will all lead to a higher cost overall. It’s an inconvenient truth that the more famous the brand, the more they can successfully charge.

Additionally, the materials make a huge difference here. If you’re wanting real leather, expect to pay a premium upwards of $200 in addition to the base cost of the chair.

Budget gaming chairs can be found for around $200, mid-range is generally $400-$500, and the absolute top tier can fetch prices up to $1500+. As with most things in life, there is a harsh case of diminishing returns as the price climbs.

An honest recommendation is to limit yourself to around $500. If you can afford to spend the big bucks, there’s no stopping you, but the value for money dramatically decreases past $400-$500.

Gaming Chairs – Leather (faux) vs fabric vs mesh

What material you opt for on a gaming chair is down to personal preference, and generally speaking, everyone will give you their own bias and opinion as to what is most important for them. If we look at it objectively, leather and fabric chairs are more comfortable than mesh, however, mesh is supremely breathable in comparison.

Faux leather tends to wear quickly than the other two types of material but this can vary from brand to brand. Many in hotter climates or who spend prolonged amounts of time in their chair swear by mesh as it is not only the coolest for the bottom but it is incredibly easy to clean, and often very comfortable too.

Others in colder climates may prefer the warmth that comes from a leather/ fabric model but in any case, do your research and figure out which is best for you before buying.

How We Choose

The best gaming chair is a complete necessity for a number of different reasons. Finding the right one can be determined by several key areas. The following is a list of the areas which we consider most important when selecting a quality chair:

  • Ergonomic Design
  • Chair Functionality
  • Lumbar support
  • Build materials & quality
  • Aesthetics

Ultimately, if the chair you’re looking to buy can tick off a few of these fundamental criteria, you’re more than likely onto a winner. However, finding a chair that houses all these qualities can sometimes be expensive and challenging, meaning you have to spend endless amounts of time researching numerous different options.

This is where WePC comes into the equation. Our team of dedicated computer enthusiasts spend their days researching and testing the best hardware offerings on the market and have focused their energy on this guide on finding the best gaming chair.

How We Test

Testing the products we recommend is a huge part of the overall selection process in our best of guides. It’s a way to make sure what we recommend is, without a doubt, the best option in its specific category.

To be sure a product is “the best,” it must show excellent performance in our tests, and display better qualities and features than the competition it faces.

Most of the products we recommend here at WePC have gone through a strict testing process that involves everything from the price and performance, to build quality, efficiency, and aesthetics. Each product is pushed to the limit to see how it performs under intense stress to make sure it warrants our coveted top spot.

Doing this enables us to provide you with the most accurate review of how the product performs and, ultimately, whether it’s worth your hard-earned cash.

Maximum load

Pros
  • Excellent ergonomics
  • Adjustable lumbar support system
  • Premium materials
  • Supremely comfortable
Cons
  • Some build quality issues

Our top spot goes to a well-known manufacturer of some of the best gaming chairs around – the Secretlab EVO 2022. This chair may not offer the best ergonomic design on the list, however, it is much more affordable, making it more accessible to the gaming masses.

Overall, the Secretlab is very easy to assemble, with screw covers attaching magnetically, making the entire experience a pleasure. Design-wise, this is easily the most aesthetically pleasing Secretlab gaming chair to date, with plush back and seat rests, new and improved armrests, and a velvety-soft head pillow.

This model comes in three different upholstery options, you can choose from their proprietary Hybrid Leatherette, SoftWeave Plus, and NAPA leather. Furthermore, their website lists 118 variants, offering a wide selection of colors and themes.

The build quality of this chair never comes into question, however, the armrests could be a bit tighter in general. We have a fully built-in lumbar support feature that implements this dial to tone the support exactly to your needs.

While the lumbar pillow has been chucked, we still have a plush, memory foam head pillow. Just like the armrests and screw covers, the pillow is magnetic and snaps into the perfect spot without the need for that pesky strap.

noblechairs hero tx anthracite

noblechairs Hero TX – Anthracite

Max load
330lbs/150kg
Adjustable backrest angle
90° to 125°
Tilt range
11°
Pros
  • Excellent fabric quality
  • Ergonomic focussed design
  • Extensive adjustability options
  • Breathable upholstery
  • Easy construction process.
Cons
  • Some will find the padding too firm
  • Very loose levers

Noblechairs have excellent choices when it comes to materials and we decided their HERO TX fabric model was worthy of our best-of. This is a well-designed chair that should stand the test of time and to top it off, assembly is incredibly easy.

In terms of comfort, this gaming chair could split opinions. That isn’t to say we had an uncomfortable experience but the base is pretty firm and some may not enjoy that. The benefit of the firmness ties in with the overall ergonomic design, in that it supports your back and helps posture.

the dark grey fabric is a superb alternative for those that dislike faux leather chairs and comes with the added bonus of being breathable. Behind the material sits Noblechairs lumbar support system.

The support can be dialed in with the knob on the side and the chair obviously comes with a head pillow but that is pretty basic.

Overall, this is a superb gaming chair and offers those who play/work in a hotter climate/ stuffy room a more breathable solution.

Weight Capacity
Up to 550 Lbs
Height Capacity
5’7”-7’0″
Pros
  • Good adjustability
  • Huge size & weight capacity
  • Good quality upholstery
Cons
  • Some manufacturing tolerance issues

The EwinRacing Flash XL is a gaming chair that offers impressive comfort levels for those that require a bit more from their seat. The main selling point behind this chair is the height and weight support, with the Flash XL being suitable for gamers that are up to 7ft tall and 550lbs in weight.

The padding on the Flash XL is quite firm on both the back and base, offering a lot of support without being plush. the base is super-wide for those with bigger bums but also has the benefit of giving you enough room to sit cross-legged if that was one of your preferences.

This model comes in faux leather that is not only durable but soft to the touch too. Lumbar support is somewhat lacking in this chair, with just a pillow to support yourself, so if you do face any back issues, it may be best to leave this one.

The build quality may not be up to the standard of the ones above but it is high on the recommendation list for the larger gamers out there.

GT Omega may not be on the top of everyone’s list, however, the Element series offers excellent value and a more affordable alternative to the premium models we see above.

Overall, the GT Omega is very easy to assemble, arriving in two boxes, one with the physical chair inside, and the other with the bits and bobs you need to build it.

For a budget gaming chair, the comfort and support were surprising. The material is soft enough and while being quite firm, remained comfortable after prolonged use. The addition of the memory foam lumbar and head pillow made it all the more comfortable, allowing you to sit back and relax when you aren’t in-game.

The chair is easily adjustable and comes with all the multi-functional tilt mechanisms you could desire, a great budget option here.
