Astro headsets are very well-regarded amongst the gaming community, they’ve garnered a reputation of quality, aesthetics, and continue to be one of the most sought-after brands. We are fans of Astro headsets here at WePC, especially after the veteran peripheral manufacturer Logitech acquired Astro for a reported $85m back in 2017. This meant that two of the top dogs in gaming headsets and general peripherals have combined forces. Since then, we’ve seen a slew of very impressive Astro headsets, and we are here to bring you a rundown of the best Astro headsets in 2024.

How we choose the best Astro headset

We’ve had our fair share of fantastic headsets here at WePC so we’ve managed to get a good gauge on quality. To that end, we know what a headset needs to have to be worthwhile. Luckily for us, Astro headsets are well-known for quality so you’ll find no lemons on this list, just the creme de la creme of Astro headsets.

Where possible, we extensively test all the headsets we can get our grubby little hands on. This allows us to put them through some real-world testing, which includes gaming, general content consumption, and some fairly rigorous build quality tests. After all, the amount of money some Astro headsets cost is truly staggering, so they’d better make it worth your hard-earned cash.

Things to consider

There are a few key areas to pay attention to when it comes to buying a new Astro headset, some might be obvious, but there are some that you might not have thought of initially. There’s a lot of very in-depth information posted around the web on headsets, often descended into a mess of statistics, acronyms, and other such nerd-speak. Here’s what you need to have in mind when picking the best Astro headset.

Comfort

This may seem obvious, but it’s frankly incredible how many headsets don’t appear to have been designed with the human body in mind. In an ideal world, you’d be able to try each and every headset within your budget on, however, in the increasingly online world we live in, that’s rarely possible. Everyone is different so there’s no one-size-fits-all here, but we’ll do our best to textually describe how these Astro headsets feel.

Audio quality

Annoyingly, the gaming headset realm of products continues to lag behind the rest of audio technology, and as such, they never sound as good as dedicated headphones. this is presumably to keep the prices tenable, without having to sacrifice on features. As you will learn in this article, and our other headset dedicated pages, the amount of features in gaming headsets these days is staggering.

Mic quality

Of course, hearing the sound is only half the battle when it comes to choosing the best Astro headsets, your teammates and opponents also need to hear you clearly, with minimal muffling or interference. Luckily Astro headsets have a reputation for good mics and the build quality generally prevents interference.

Price

Astro may have a reputation for making premium and expensive headsets, but they make some budget models too, and the quality on these is still excellent. We’ve included picks from the entirety of Astro’s pricing spectrum so regardless of your budget, you can make an informed decision on the best Astro headset to buy. Additionally, large retailers like Amazon and Best-buy frequently have headsets and other gaming peripherals on sale. This means it’s worth shopping around as you may be able to steal one of these fantastic Astro headsets out the door for considerably less than MSRP.

ASTRO Gaming A50 Wireless Gaming Headset

Type Over-ear
Frequency range 20-20,000 Hz
Wireless? Yes
Battery Life 15 hours
Noise-cancelling No

PROS
  • Included base station
  • Great audio reproduction
  • Very comfortable
  • Superb build quality
CONS
  • Very expensive

The Astro A50 gaming headset is one of the most feature-rich gaming headset packages we’ve seen in recent years. It lacks RGB as it originated in the era preceding the industry-wide push for rainbow illumination. It’s got it where it counts, however, with stellar comfort, awesome sound quality, and the included Base station not only charges the headset but acts as an external USB DAC. This means that you don’t have to rely on the onboard audio of your motherboard, and it leaves the motherboard audio free for other uses.

The base station also contains both optical and 3.5mm lines out, so you can drive external speakers through it, meaning it becomes the all-in-one audio solution. Audiophiles of the highest standard will of course still prefer a sound card, but for the vast majority of gamers, the Astro A50 base station will be more than sufficient.

Of course, the base station isn’t the only thing that earns the A50s the award of best Astro headset. Astro continues to be faithful in its promise for support after purchase, with replacements many of the individual components that make up this headset available on their website. This inspires confidence in the longevity of this product, and the non-proprietary inputs on the Base stations mean that it’ll stay widely compatible for years to come.

The best budget Atro headset
Astro A10 Gaming Headset
Astro A10
Type Over-ear
Frequency range 20 Hz – 20 kHz
Wireless? No
Noise-Cancelling No
Drivers 40 mm, with Neodymium magnets
PROS
  • Lightweight
  • Excellent build quality for the price
  • Great bass
CONS
  • Comfort can be hit or miss for some users

Oftentimes headsets that come under the ‘budget’ or ‘cheap’ category get their low prices from the usage of substandard materials, bad packaging, and sometimes truly terrible audio. Luckily, This is not the case with the Astro A10s. Of course, given the 346g/12.2oz weight the construction of this Astro headset is predominantly plastic. However, it avoids being flimsy by the choice implementation of aluminum where strength or rigidity is needed, this was the same great tactic we noticed in our HyperX Cloud Stinger review.

Another positive aspect of the A10s that stems from their price is simplicity. No adapters, dongles, or external sound cards. Just plug and play, no need to worry about finicky software or compatibility issues, just plug the 3.5mm audio cables into a vacant port on your device of choice, and get back to gaming.

Of course, the drivers aren’t the largest coming in at around 40mm, but trust us, they sound bigger than that and can hold their own, even against gaming headsets exceeding this price range. Additionally, the comfort of the headset has been found to be a little hit-or-miss around the office, so your mileage may vary. It’s worth noting that the majority of people who tried them on liked them, but there was a not-insignificant amount of people who disagreed.

Type Over-ear
Frequency range 20-20,000 Hz

PROS
  • Very comfortable
  • Excellent audio quality
  • Available with/without Mixamp
CONS
  • Slight fuzz to the mic

The A10s earn their place on the Best Astro headsets page for their well-balanced price. The features are more numerous than the A10s, but they have a far less eye-watering price than the super-premium A50s.

They aren’t wireless, but they have very simple plug-and-play connectivity and the same drivers and overall design as the A50s. If you all the comfort of the best Astro headset, but you’re unwilling to pay such a large price, the A40s are the perfect selection for you.

Additionally, they can come bundled with a dock for an extra price premium, this makes them essentially identical in functionality and expandability to the Astro A50s, just without the wireless functionality. If you can live with being tethered to your desk while gaming, look no further than the Astro A40 gaming headset.

Some have expressed some disappointment with the mic on the Astro A40, but most seem to think it’s perfectly cromulent despite this. It’s worth noting here that Astro headsets do have a small reputation for dodgy mics. We haven’t experienced this, but it’s worth knowing all the same.

Final Word

There we have it folks, a comprehensive look at the best Astro headsets. Astro has a considerable reputation to uphold so whichever option you go for will be a safe bet here. The A50’s of course had to take the title of best Astro headset for their superb build quality and convenient powerful dock system. The Astro A10 represents Astro well on the budget end of the spectrum, boasting quality where it matters and a very agreeable price tag. The A40 has all the making of the last headset you’ll need and the optional mixamp upgrades them to match the A50’s functionality, sans wireless operation.
