razer headset buyers guide

If you have been looking for a way to better immerse yourself in your games, picking up a gaming headset is a great way to get started. Not only will these headsets give you a better level of sound quality, but they also have some great features that are sure to improve your enjoyment while playing.

Wearing a headset when playing a game is a great way to feel closer to the action. If you’ve never tried this before, you’re missing out! You’ll suddenly find yourself being able to hear more of what’s going on around you and will start to pick up on things you may have missed previously.

If you are a competitive gamer, there’s no better way to give yourself an edge against the competition. When compared to those not using a headset, the fact you can easily communicate with your teammates and hear your enemies approaching is invaluable.

Why Buy A Razer Headset?

It’s always pretty hard to know what to look for when you decide to pick up a product. One of the best ways to get started is to read as many reviews as you can and have a good idea of what you’re looking for in a headset.

Choosing a headset from a well-known manufacturer is a great way to narrow down your search. You’ll find there are a lot more headsets on offer with more reviews and a name that you can trust. If you’ve been burned in the past with a cheap knock-off, buying from a well-known name is a great way to avoid this.

Razer is one of the biggest companies in the gaming world at the moment. They supply everything from mice to keyboards, headsets, and pre-built gaming systems. Founded over 15 years ago, they have been providing great quality components to gamers for as long as we can remember and are a brand that many of us put our trust in.

Where Can You Buy a Razer Headset?

If you have decided that you want to pick up a Razer headset, there are a number of ways you can do it.

The most obvious one is to head over to Razer’s official website and to check out their lineup. Once there, you can filter down your search to headsets to get an idea of what’s on offer. You can choose to purchase these headsets directly from Razer or even to have a look for sites that might sell it slightly cheaper.

Sites such as Amazon will also allow you to pick up Razer headsets, including older models that are currently discontinued. You’ll also be able to check out similar products, compare features, and even read reviews from customers who are verified purchasers.

You may be able to find a good deal on headsets on other online technology retailers such as Scan and Overlockers. While they may have a smaller lineup, there’s still a decent range of products on offer.

Which Razer Headset Is Best for You?

Razer Kraken X

Tech Specs

  • Frequency Response – 12 Hz – 28 kHz
  • Connection Type – Wired, 1.3 m / 4.27 ft cable length
  • Weight – 250 g

First off, we’re going to start with the lightest headphones on the list. This is a great looking headset that won’t break the bank. While you will lose some of the fancier features you’d see on higher-end models, the Razer Kraken X still remains a fantastic headset.

If you’re also looking for a headset that you can use when away from your computer, the Razer Kraken X has a simple design that doesn’t draw too much attention to it being a gaming headset. We could easily see this being used in coffee shops or even an office without attracting any attention.

The headset is mainly plastic in build quality but this is to be expected at such a low price. However, this doesn’t result in a headset that feels like it will break apart. The build quality is still high considering its price.

When it comes to sound quality, this headset doesn’t disappoint either. While the sound quality is by no means groundbreaking when listening to music, it is still a cut above the rest when compared to other headsets at this price point. The bass is quite prominent in these headphones, which might be something you are looking for if you play a lot of FPS titles. Explosions and gunshots will be more pronounced and the 7.1 surround sound will help you pinpoint enemies in no time.

Razer Nari Ultimate

Tech Specs

  • Frequency Response – 20 Hz – 20 kHz
  • Connection Type – Wireless, 8 hours battery life, 12 m / 40 ft range
  • Weight – 431 g

It’s not every day a headset manages to break the mold. The Razer Nari Ultimate aims to set itself apart from other headphones with its inclusion of haptic feedback technology. This is something that we’ve seen in controllers for years and you’ll be surprised to see how well it works on headphones – this does come with a larger price tag, however.

This headset isn’t all about shaking your head around though! You’ll be glad to know that the Razer Nari Ultimate has a great level of sound quality and doesn’t overdo it in the bass department. While you’re more likely to use these for gaming than listening to music, that’s not to say they aren’t capable. It’s nice to see a set of headphones that don’t overload you with bass when you’re listening to your music.

The wireless functionality is also a great feature to have on a gaming headset. Getting rid of trailing wires is a quality of life benefit that is hard to let go of. Batteries are now better than ever and while your mileage may vary, you can expect up to eight hours of active use with these headphones which should be more than enough for most gamers.

Razer Kraken Tournament Edition

Tech Specs

  • Frequency Response – 12 Hz – 28 kHz
  • Connection Type – Wired, 1.3 m / 4.27 ft cable length
  • Weight – 322 g

If you want a headset that has more of a gamer-focused design philosophy, the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition comes in a luminous green color that is sure to turn heads. With Razer written across the headband and the logo on both ear cups, there’s no mistaking this headset. If this isn’t quite to your taste, there is a black edition available with all of the same features.

The biggest feature that this headset has to offer is the incredible THX Spatial Audio which allows for “pinpoint positional accuracy greater than 7.1 surround sound”. This is perfect for those who are gearing towards immersion and want to know exactly what is going on in their surroundings.

There is also an impressive level of control when it comes to the bass on this set of headphones. If you are the type of person who doesn’t like their headphones too bass-heavy, you can choose to tweak this with 17 levels of customization available.

This headset also comes with an amp that can be used to toggle off the THX Spatial Audio, mute your microphone, and of course, adjust volume levels. This does result in a bit of lost desk space as you’ll have to stick the amp to the desk, plug the headphones into the amp, and then finally the amp into the computer.

Razer Thresher Ultimate

Tech Specs

  • Frequency Response – 12 Hz – 28 kHz
  • Connection Type – Wireless, 16 hours battery life, 12 m / 40 ft range
  • Weight – 408 g

The Razer Thresher Ultimate is another great gaming headset that offers fantastic comfort, quality sound, and very little setup.

The Thresher Ultimate headset features Dolby 7.1 digital surround sound and the sound quality blows many other gaming headsets out of the water. Bass, mids, and highs sound great on this headset and the sound profile is pretty well balanced. When it comes to gameplay, you’ll easily be able to pick out key sounds such as explosions or gunfire without them being too drowned out with bass.

If you’re going to be using this headset for long sessions, you’ll be glad to know that this is a very comfortable headset. It features cushioned foam under leatherette pads with additional cushioning in the headband which really makes it feel premium.

When it comes to controls, they are neatly tucked away inside the headphones themselves. The left earcup allows you to do some dial controlling between game and call audio. This will also allow you to mute the mic which has a red light to tell you when it’s muted. On the right earcup, there’s a dial to adjust the volume and also a button that you can use to mute the sound.

The Thresher’s microphone is also pretty impressive. You can position it wherever you want and it picks up audio accurately so you’ll never run into the problem of your friends not hearing you clearly.

Things To Consider

Price Range

It’s always important to have a price range in mind when looking for a new headset. If you’re not careful, it can be easy to get pulled in by the flashy marketing and walk away with the most expensive headset on offer.

Today, we’ve made sure to cover a few different options in Razer’s vast lineup. A couple of these headphones are definitely on the budget side of things which is great for those who are a bit cash-constrained at the moment.

If you can stretch your budget a little bit when looking for headsets, you’ll be able to pick up a headset with a few extra features. This can include wireless technology, RGB lighting, or even just a greater level of audio fidelity.

Sound Quality

Now, there would be no use in buying a new headset if it didn’t have a good level of sound quality. When looking at headsets, you’ll want to find one that offers a decent level of sound quality without breaking the bank.

Every headset will sound different. Some will be heavy on the bass whereas others may sound fairly neutral. It all comes down to personal taste when picking a headset, what sounds good to one person may sound horrible to another.

Features such as surround sound and noise-canceling can also have a huge impact on how a headset feels. If you care about getting the best level of sound quality out of your headphones, be prepared to pay a bit extra.

To get the maximum enjoyment out of a headset it has to be comfortable. The best headsets out there will not only be great quality, but you’ll forget you’re even wearing one after a while.

If you are looking for a new gaming headset, be sure to find one that is relatively lightweight and made from durable components. Reviews should help you get a rough idea of the build quality but if in doubt, see if you can find a store that will let you try one on.

One of the ways in which a gaming headset can differ from a standard set of headphones is by the level of features it offers. Gaming headsets will often have a couple of features that cater to the gaming crowd. You can expect to find flashy designs, RGB lighting, microphones, noise-canceling software, and surround sound options on some of the headphones you look at.

Some features such as wireless technology can be a lifesaver when gaming, not having to worry about getting tangled up in your own wires is a great quality of life feature that is slowly becoming the norm.

These added features will usually have an impact on the overall price of the headset but that isn’t to say there aren’t great deals waiting to be found out there.

Not Quite Set On Razer?

Don’t worry if none of the above headsets took your fancy. If you still aren’t too sure what brand to go with, there are plenty of others out there. A quick look at the sidebar on Amazon will show you a number of different headset manufacturers that you can check out

To save you a bit of time, brands such as Corsair, Astro, and Steelseries are a great place to look if you are stuck for ideas. All of these companies are well renowned and there are some great options to choose from. In fact, here are some of our favorite non-Razer headset reviews for you to take a look at:
