Apex Legends and Creator Codes

Apex Legends is one of the most popular Battle Royales out there, with an estimated 10 Million players each day across all platforms. Needless to say, the free-to-play game is a huge success and the after-work enjoyment of many individuals across the world.

However, something to note is the game is indeed free and available for all. As such, their main revenue comes from the various in-game purchases one can make. Each player has access to various in-game cosmetics, characters referred to as Legends or Apex packs which can be purchased using in-game currency. Although many of these cosmetics or Legends can be purchased through players’ own money, all of it can be gained organically through the game if one plays long enough.

Whilst Respawn, the studio behind Apex Legends, certainly doesn’t seem to be losing a profit from the maintenance and upkeep of Apex, like any other business it would be wise of them to consider how to cut costs and raise profits. This has lead to many individuals wondering whether Apex will integrate Creator Codes to the game.

What is a Creator Code?

Initially introduced via Clash of Clans, creator codes were specific codes that would allow players to support their favourite online creators through any in-game purchases they made.

All players needed to do was let the game know who they were supporting by entering their creator code and then next time they made any in-game purchases, a 5% share of that transaction would go right into the creator’s pocket.

What are the benefits of a Creator Code?

  • For the players? Nothing much other than the idea that they’re helping some of their favourite creators create new and fun content.

  • For the creators? Plenty. Many of these creators don’t exactly earn a steady stream of money each month. Instead they rely on the content they make, how popular it is and if they’re lucky. Some might be sponsored by other companies. The creator code offers them at least some income and, depending on just how popular and successful they are, these creator codes could inflate their pockets all the more.

  • For the game developers? Even more. When it comes to free-to-play games, most of their revenues is made from the in-game purchases that players can make. However, many players don’t make in-game purchases and simply enjoy the game for what it is, without any of the cosmetics. Thus, the companies want to encourage players to play their game and hope a large amount of them are the spending type.

At the end of the day, creators provide advertisement and the creator code is their recompense.

Various streamers or content creators who are part of the creator code scheme will encourage new and old players to make in-game purchases. Both the creators and the game developers will be making more money than they’re losing either way, and thus is a win-win scenario.

Will Apex use Creator Codes?

As of now, Respawn has not made no mention of Apex using Creator Codes but we do wonder if it’s only a matter of time. Considering one of the biggest Battle Royales on the market, Fortnite has its own Support-A-Creator scheme.

Fortnite, like Apex, is also a free-to-play game with in-game purchases. All of these purchases do not affect gameplay and are only cosmetic changes. Nonetheless, according to recently released court documents from the Epic vs Apple antitrust suit, we now have a vague idea of just how much money Fortnite is making.

Between 2018 and 2019, Fornite made over $9 billion. And it’s likely not hard to imagine just how many of Fortnite’s creators are earning a small portion of that. Considering that Twitch alone had an average of 144.5 thousand viewers watching Fortnite content between January and March 2021, there’s no doubt that a large majority of these viewers later become players who would be more inclined to spend!

Whether or not Respawn does eventually implement Creator Codes, only time will tell. Though many of Apex Legend’s biggest content creators across Youtube and Twitch certainly hope they do.
