What Are The New Ryzen 5000 Series Processors?

AMD’s new Ryzen 5000 processors are based on the third iteration of their Zen architectures, based on a 7nm process. These are expected to offer a jump in performance and power efficiency compared to previous Ryzen chips.

Unlike the recently unveiled 4000G Series, these are processors that will be sold directly as standalone processors, so these can be used in your custom-built system, rather than being specific for just prebuilt systems and laptops.

With Intel seeming to have trouble shifting to a 7nm process and delaying their roadmap for upcoming processors by six months, these are perhaps going to be the best opportunity for upgrading your PC with a new PC for some time.

  • Ryzen 9 5950X – 4.9GHz Clock Boost, 72MB Cache, 105W TDP, 16 cores/32 threads
  • Ryzen 9 5900X – 4.8GHz Clock boost, 70MB Cache, 105W TDP, 12 cores/24 threads
  • Ryzen 7 5800X – 4.7GHz Clock Boost, 36MB Cache, 105W TDP, 8 cores/16 threads
  • Ryzen 5 5600X – 4.6GHz Clock Boost, 35MB Cache, 65W TDP,  6 cores/12 threads

Ryzen 5000 Series Release Date

AMD has finally confirmed that both the latest Zen 3 CPU lineup and the RDNA 2 GPUs are set to be released later this year. That’s right, this year! However, one of the big questions that have still yet to be answered is, when exactly? Well, finally our questions have been answered! Dr. Lisa Su explained all in the Livestream, sparking even more excitement around this already huge product launch.

Below are the release dates for the latest AMD Zen 3 CPUs:

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5950X – November 5th
  • AMD Ryzen 9 5900X – November 5th
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X – November 5th
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600X – November 5th

AMD Ryzen 5000 Peformance

One of the big speculations that surround the latest CPUs comes hand in hand with performance. Will AMD finally get ahead of Intel with their latest Zen 3 CPUs? For me, I’d hope AMD come out swinging, however, it’s not fully clear what is in store just yet. That being said, AMD did label their Livestream as “Where Gaming Begins”, leading many to believe that this could be the start of a new wave of gaming performance.

Zen 3 will be delivering performance that is bang in line with what you can usually expect from any new architecture. So, by that assumption, consumers should be looking at a 10-15% IPC improvement when comparing Zen 3 to today’s chips.

Assumptions aside; here is what Dr. Su had to say when it came to gaming performance and Ryzen 5000 series CPUs.

4 1

The first CPU announced was the Ryzen 9 5900X, AMD’s new flagship desktop gaming CPU.

It promises to bring 12 cores/24 threads, up to 4.8GHz clock frequency, 70MB of L2+L3 cache, 105W TDP to the table. All that translates to an impressive 26% increase over their last-gen flagship. When comparing that to the Intel i9 10900k, you can expect greater single-core performance, alongside the usual higher multi-core performance too. We also saw an impressive 2.8X efficiency boost when compared to the 10900K.

The new layout that Zen 3 brings to the table allows all cores onto a unified eight-core complex which accelerates core to core communication that’s great for gaming. Furthermore, we can expect a reduced memory latency for gaming and a 19% desktop IPC uplift too – great for performance across all applications. Wider issue in float and Int engines can also be expected, with advanced load/store performance and flexibility. This is all part of AMD’s “zero bubble” brand prediction – all geared towards gamers.

On-screen benchmarking was shown for the Ryzen 9 5900X, showcasing a 28% increase (in 1080p) in titles such as Shadow Of The Tomb Raider in comparison to last-gen. Over a wide range of games, the 5900X offered 26% better performance than the 3900X, with titles such as League Of Legends and CS:GO profiting closer to 50%.

To complete the performance benchmarking of the Ryzen 9 5900X, we saw benchmarking comparisons between the i9 10900K and the 5900X. The 5900X came out on top in almost every title – bar Battlefield V.

There was no sign of any indication of what the Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 7 5800X would provide, however, Dr. Su did showcase their Zen 3 Ryzen 9 5950X, “the best of both worlds” CPU.

This monster CPU will come equipped with 16 cores/32 threads, up to 4.9GHz Clock Boost, 72MB L2+L3 cache, and a 105W TDP. It provided the highest Cinebench score of any desktop CPU at 640. The new 5950X smashed the 3950X in content creation performance, showing a 27% performance increase over CAD workloads. Equally as impressive Raytracing performance could be seen, alongside 9% compiling and 5% video editing performance as well.

We got a quick glimpse into the gaming performance of the Ryzen 9 5950X too, with AMD’s offering bring a 5% increase over the i9-10900K in titles such as Shadow of The Tomb Raider and Total War: Three Kingdoms.

Ryzen 5000 Series Price

One of the biggest talking points that have arisen from the speculation of the new Ryzen 5000 series CPUs is the price. Looking back on years gone by, AMD has always been calculated and meticulous when it comes to competitively pricing their products – the Zen 3 lineup was absolutely no different. Lisa Su kept everyone waiting for the announcement of the pricing, leaving it till almost the very end of the stream.

Below are the latest AMD Ryzen 5000 Zen 3 CPU prices:

  • Ryzen 5 5600X – $299
  • Ryzen 7 5800X – $449
  • Ryzen 9 5900X – $549
  • Ryzen 9 5950X – $799

AMD Ryzen Zen 3 | Frequently Asked Questions

As with most product launches, the Ryzen 5000 series is already sparking plenty of speculation regarding what it can and can’t do. Alongside that, a whole host of frequently asked questions crop up as well.

AMD Ryzen 5000 Zen 3 | Final Thoughts

So, there you have it guys, our complete rundown of the Live event, and all the latest information regarding AMD’s new, hugely impressive Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. Overall, I was a little underwhelmed by the entire stream. AMD seemed to focus most of their time on competing against one Intel CPU – the 10900K. There was hardly any data when referencing the Ryzen 5600X and 5800X either.

The main positive I took from the live stream was the impressive nature of both the 5900X and 5950X CPU. If benchmarking figures are to be believed, AMD has done a fantastic job of bridging the gap between themselves and Intel.

We’ll be creating more in-depth pieces in the coming days, so remember to check back for the latest information regarding everything AMD and Zen 3.
