Once again the rumor mill is turning, as nothing is kept secret these days even more new graphics cards are supposedly coming. Now the next on the list are more refreshes as the RTX 40 Super GPUs are rumored. With the RTX 4080 Super release date apparently on the horizon.

The latest leaks suggest that Nvidia is already planning a refresh to its Ada series lineup. The GPU range was released in October 2022 with the RTX 4090. Usually, a year of the architecture would mark its halfway point, but it has also been rumored that Nvidia is postponing the RTX 50 series release so it might be wanting to pad out the launches with these newer options.

What we might expect from the RTX 40 Super range

From the new range, there have been some rumors already as to what we might expect from them. Starting with the die, which at the moment supposedly has a few options for the two cards currently suggested that are coming. As Videocardz reports and followed up by a PCI ID update, the RTX 4080 Super is expected to be using the AD103 chipset that would place it between the 4080 and 90. As for the RTX 4070 Super, that is suggested to be AD103 or AD104. This gives it a lot more flexibility seeing as it could sit anywhere between the 80, 70 Ti, and 70 models.

Although previously it had been suggested that the 4080 S would get a 20GB memory configuration, if the later leaks do hold up with an AD103 chip the GPU won’t have support for that much memory. That would give the 4070 Super the potential for 16GB with an AD103 base GPU.

Why we don’t need the RTX 4080 Super

The current lineup hasn’t been much to be thrilled about. We’ve seen the likes of the RTX 4060 Ti getting discounts just days after launch, and the RTX 4060 was similar. Even the RTX 4080 surprised everyone with the price hike over the previous generation. There is no real demand for them as much as previous options, that was mostly inflated by other factors to be fair, but still, the pricing and lack of improvements do make it rather not worth it.

Even though DLSS 3 and frame generation a major factors to these, not every game has it implemented. Instead, any RTX card can still enjoy other DLSS upscaling to improve what it can achieve. But these expensive GPUs are just too much, especially when living costs are increasing no one wants to spend so much on gaming PCs.

Looking at the Steam Hardware survey we see most people going for the RTX 3060, and following that the 60 or 50 series come up. So that should be the focus instead, even a super version for the 4060 that improves the memory capacity and bandwidth for a better price would be great. But no one wants the 4080 or higher really. Especially considering the 4070 can already do 4k gameplay at a much lower cost.
