Suikoden Creators Are Crowdfunding a Spiritual Successor

The creators behind Suikoden are working on what has been described as a “spiritual successor” to the classic RPG.

A new team called Rabbit & Bear Studios announced a Kickstarter campaign to fund the upcoming game – Eiyuden Chronicle. This is an old-school style role-playing game designed to invoke a bit of nostalgia for fans of old RPGs.

The story is written by Yoshitaka Murayama, who wrote the story of the original Suikoden and Suikoden II. He’s also working with Junko Kawano who provided character design for Suikoden and Juichi Murakami who worked on art design for Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

What Can We Expect from Eiyuden Chronicle?

Eiyuden Chronicle is a brand new JRPG which uses a traditional turn-based RPG battle system. Players can take control of one of six individual units which will go head to head against creatures and armies.

The story is set in one corner of Allraan, a collection of nations with a diverse mix of cultures. This world has been “shaped by the alliances and aggressions of the humans, beastmen, elves, and desert people who live there.”

The plot centers around magical objects called “rune-lenses”. The Galdean Empire has discovered a technology that amplifies this magic and is looking for a way to boost this power even further.

This is where the main characters come in. Seign Kesling is an imperial officer and Nowa is a boy from a village. They meet, form an unlikely friendship and embark on an expedition to help the Empire expand its power. However, they are dragged into a war that forces them to “reexamine everything they believe to be right and true.”

During this game, you’ll come across a range of different enemies from dragons to golems which all have their own abilities and skills. Aside from all the battles, you’ll get the chance to explore the world of Eiyuden, meet plenty of different characters and perhaps more importantly, meet plenty of cats.

“Eiyuden Chronicle isn’t just a classic-style JRPG. It’s also full of adorable cats,” the Kickstarter page reads. “Cats meowing, cats napping, cats exploring the world. Cats, cats, cats. Meow!”

On the Kickstarter campaign page, you can see a full list of character profiles as well as some information about the gameplay.

Smashing the Kickstarter Target

Interest in this upcoming game seems to be pretty high. The Rabbit & Bear Studios team has since smashed their target by a wide margin.

They have surpassed their original target of $500,000 and the numbers are still continuing to climb with 31 days left before the campaign ends. This puts it in the league of Kickstarter mega-hits, like Double Fine Adventure, Bloodstained, Mighty Number 9, and Shenmue 3.

What Platforms Will We See Eiyuden Chronicle On?

The original aim is for the game to be released on PC once the minimum target is met. After this, developers are also looking to release the game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in the future. Given how well the Kickstarter fund is doing, we’d say there’s definitely a possibility that we’ll see this on next-gen consoles.
