Best LGA 1700 cooler for Intel 12th Gen CPUs

Looking for the best Intel CPU cooler? Intel has replaced the LGA 1200 socket size for the rectangular LGA 1700. Compared to its predecessor, LGA 1700 features 500 more pins, requiring the 12th gen processors to be 7.5mm longer. This is the first major change in Intel’s LGA CPU socket size in well over a decade (since LGA 775) for the consumer-grade market. This is our best LGA 1700 CPU cooler article.

Most of the major players in the game announced that they’re incorporating compatibility with the socket LG A 1700 in their current products or manufacturing new parts to ensure that is the case. By now, every cooler manufacturer has included compatibility whether they announced it or not. LGA 1700 is just a little longer than LGA 1200 as it contains 500 more contact pins.

What is LGA 1700?

The LGA 1700 socket was announced back at CES 2021, specially designed for Intel’s latest hybrid architecture. The LGA 1700 socket features an additional 500 contacts compared to its predecessor (clues in the name), increasing the socket height by 7.5mm. This has forced cooler manufacturers to produce and ship accomodating brackets to ensure their customers don’t have to buy a new model entirely.

ROG Press Kit 14

While some manufacturers, such as Lian Li, be quiet!, and Noctua are essentially giving away the brackets for free (small shipping fee), other brands are charging anything between $2-$5 (especially if you ahve no proof of purchase). Some consumers may be disgruntled by this by but it’s just one of those generational change costs we are going to have to take on the chin.

The z690 motherboard is the first of its kind, carrying the LGA 1700 socket, among many other nice-to-have features, truly bringing us into the next generation.

LGA 1700 Vs LGA 1200

LGA 1200 was the LGA 1151 replacement, supporting the 10th and 11th generation Intel processors. The name comes from the amount of protruding pins that make contact with the pads on the processor. As you can tell by the name, the LGA 1700 socket has an extra 500 pins, making the dimensions change from a square 37.5mm x 37.5mm (LGA 1200) to 45mm x 37.5mm.

This change coincides with Intel’s introduction of its hybrid architecture to the desktop x86 market. Intel is moving away from the conventional sets of identical CPU cores, splitting them into performance and efficiency cores (Big.Little).

Socket LGA 1700 vs LGA 1200

Just in case you were unaware of the changes made this time around, we’ve broken down the difference between the two Intel sockets.

The LGA 1700 socket, also known as Socket A, is the successor to the LGA 1200 socket, which was introduced in 2020. Some of the main differences between the two sockets include:

  • LGA 1700 has a larger pin count than LGA 1200 (171 pins vs. 1200 pins)
  • LGA 1700 uses a new CPU architecture, called Alder Lake, which is a hybrid architecture that combines high-performance and high-efficiency cores. This is not compatible with LGA 1200 processors
  • LGA 1700 also supports DDR5 RAM, while LGA 1200 supports DDR4 RAM.
  • LGA 1700 also supports PCIe 5.0, while LGA 1200 supports PCIe 4.0

In summary, LGA 1700 socket is designed for the new Alder Lake processors, which offer improved performance and efficiency, and support for faster memory and faster PCI-E interface.

LGA 1700 Coolers: what’s new?

What is the best LGA 1700 CPU cooler? Or more importantly, what’s new? LGA 1700 coolers as the name suggests are coolers designed to fit the LGA 1700 socket, or more specifically designed to fit the new backplate. Motherboard manufacturers had to implement a brand new backplate for the LGA 1700 socket due to the fact the socket had changed shape to accommodate for the altered shape of Intel’s 12th generation CPUs.

Most cooler manufacturers sought to circumvent this dilemma by manufacturing new backplates to mount their LGA 1151/1200 coolers rather than designing a whole new cooler.
This was ideal for speed and cost-effectiveness. After all, not much had changed dimension-wise between LGA 1200 and LGA 1700, just the width.

LGA 1700 Cooler Compatibility List

Most, if not all, popular air and AIO coolers are going to be compatible with LGA 1700 thanks to a new mounting bracket. Manufacturers will most likely start to include this bracket with their products in the future to save customers from purchasing them separately.

What happens if a CPU is improperly cooled?

If a CPU is not properly cooled, it can overheat and become damaged. This can lead to system crashes, data corruption, and in severe cases, permanent damage to the CPU. To avoid this, it is important to make sure that the computer’s cooling system is functioning properly and that the CPU is not overheating. This can be done by monitoring the temperature of the CPU using software tools or by physically checking the cooling system for any blockages or issues.

Features 3.5" Full Color LCD Screen
PROS
  • High Performance
  • LCD Screen
  • Aesthetically, one of the best looking AIOs on the market
CONS
  • More affordable options that perform similarly

Aesthetically, the ASUS ROG Ryujin II is one of the most aesthetically pleasing AIO coolers on the market, mostly thanks to its huge pump and accompanying LCD Screen.

This model is available in both 240 and 360mm, giving builders with different size cases an opportunity to incorporate this into their system.

Then Ryuijin features 380mm long tubing comprised of thick rubber and sleeved, to add durability and make it look more appealing. The main talking point behind this AIO is the addition of the LCD screen, which allows any image or GIF you desire to appear front and center. The LCD screen also has AIDA64 support, meaning you can slap system information on the 3.5″, full-color screen if so inclined.

All in all, we have a beefy, efficient radiator that will provide your new Intel 12th gen CPU with all the cooling it needs and the inclusion of this massive pump and screen just makes it all the better.

The Best Air LGA 1700 CPU Cooler
Noctua NH-D15
Noctua NH D15
Type Air
Max RPM 1500 RPM
Max Noise 24.6 dB
Dimensions (H)165 x (W)150 x (D)150 mm
PROS
  • Low-noise
  • Highly effceint
  • Suitable for top CPUs
CONS
  • Large size, make sure you have the space

The Noctua NH-D15 stands head and shoulders against a lot of the competition, with this air cooler even giving liquid options a ruin for their money.

The design is a bit hit and miss for some, however, we are a fan of the brown, and it’s the cooling potential that matters most. The size can be quite of putting for a lot of builders, with a bit of extra clearance needed for the two giant heatsinks and accompanying 140mm fans. Noctua does offer an ‘S’ variant for those that really want this model but lack the space.

Overall, if you can fit this in your PC, it’s a beast. The max noise sits near 24.6dB and with a max RPM of 1500, you’ve got a powerful cooling solution here.

PROS
  • Excellent cooling performance
  • Visually superb
  • RGB heaven
CONS
  • Expensive

When the Corsair H150i iCUE Elite Capellix first arrived on the scene, it was high on a lot of PC builders’ lists. Corsair managed to keep cooling as efficient as ever but updated the aesthetics in a glorious fashion.

The cooling potential of the H150i matches the competition and there are other similar variants to cater for a variety of case sizes too. This 360mm option is perfect for the new i9-12900K, and the RGB makes any system look magnificent.

Speaking of aesthetics, there are few coolers that do it as well as the Capellix. From the pump to the fans, it looks great and the fact it can provide all the cooling a high TDP CPU needs is a welcome bonus.

PROS
  • Extremely silent with a maximum of 24.3dB
  • Easy to install
  • Effective cooler
CONS
  • Quite large, make sure you have the room

The Dark Rock Pro 4 by be quiet! is a popular option in the PC realm, thanks to its highly efficient cooling performance and near-silent operation. you could opt for any cooler on this list to take care of the i7-12700K but we have always been a fan of the Dark Rock Pro 4, thanks to its efficiency, noise output, and ease of installation.

Aesthetically this is a rival to the Noctua above, giving you a beefy air cooler in an all-black aesthetic. The size is quite large thanks to the giant heatsinks and fans but the low noise of 24.3 dB maxed is marvelous.

Lastly, the Dark Rock is very easy to install and takes any stresses large cooler installation can have with a well thought out design, it’s great.

The Best Budget LGA 1700 CPU Cooler
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition
Type Air
Max RPM 2,000 RPM
Max Noise 26 dBa
Dimensions (H)120 x (W)77 x (D)158.5 mm
PROS
  • Excellent price to perfomrance
  • Relatively quiet
  • Great value
CONS
  • Not really suitable for the i9/ i7 SKUS but would be great for the i5-12600K

Despite being a budget cooler, the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition is still a fan favorite. The cooling performance is exceptional for the price and you are still getting relatively quiet operation too.

With four aluminium pipes and aluminium fins, this is highly effective at its job. Considering how affordable this is, a low noise output of 26dB is not to be sniffed at either but you should avoid this if buying one of the top two Intel 12th gen SKUs.

The performance of this cooler may not match the rest in this round-up but it is a solid option for anyone looking to buy an i5-12600K or 12400 and deserves its place among these LGA 1700 coolers.

For everyone else looking to upgrade, the AIO and air coolers in this list are the best in their class and will efficiently cool your new Alder Lake CPU with ease.

Don’t forget, if you have one of the compatible coolers listed above, you can contact the manufacturer and possibly get an LGA 1700 bracket sent out for free, if not, they are relatively cheap. We hope our best LGA 1700 CPU cooler article helped you find your next Intel 12th Gen CPU cooler.
