Anyone with an LG C2 OLED or newer TV can finally get rid of annoying ads

LG smart TVs in the past decade or so have been running on webOS, the operating system which dictates the features and software available to you. Recent changes have given more users the chance to upgrade to webOS 23, which comes with the ability to turn off ads on the home screen. It appears that not everyone is aware of this useful change, so here’s your PSA.
We assume that no-one likes ads clogging up their TV’s home screen, and now you don’t have to deal with it if you have a 2022 or newer LG TV. So if you’re buying one of the new 2024 models, you don’t have to worry about ads either.

webOS 23 has no ads on the home screen
We recently talked about how you should be able to upgrade your LG C2 OLED TV to the newer webOS 23, which is a big change as the 2022 models have previously been stuck on the older 22 operating system. One of the biggest improvements is that there are no ads on the home screen, as long as you remember to disable them in the settings. To do so simply do the following:
- Press the Settings button your LG remote control
- Go to All Settings > General > System > Additional Settings > Home Settings
- Turn off ‘Home Promotion’
Coming across this Reddit thread brought this issue to our attention, as it appears that some reviewers still aren’t aware of this change which is available in both webOS 23 and webOS 24. You may still have to wait for your operating system update for the 2022 models (like the C2), but this will be readily available on 2023 or newer TVs.
webOS 24 is exclusive to 2024 models, for now
LG previously announced that five years of webOS support is coming to their 2022 or newer TVs. We first thought that meant that they’d all be updated to webOS 24 straight away, but that is no longer the case.
As Tom’s Guide reports, they are keeping the latest operating system exclusive to the latest 2024 models. The roadmap below (recently sighted at an event in Frankfurt) explains that we’ll have to wait until next year to get that upgrade on TVs such as the C2 or C3, or equivalent series.
