Far Cry 6 Accidentally Announced Ahead Of Schedule On PSN HK

Update: and now Ubisoft has offered a somewhat tongue in cheek response to the leak, plus a brief video showing Giancarlo Esposito’s character from the game.

Well, whoopsie daisy. Looks like someone over at Sony jumped the gun a little here, as the store page for this previously unannounced new entry in the long-running Far Cry series got posted early by Playstation Hong Kong. It’s been taken down now, but not before we got a look at it. Far Cry 6 is to be the next Far Cry game, and it’s going to be starring Giancarlo Esposito, as is shown in this promotional artwork for the game:

It’s an obvious fit, where the Far Cry series in recent entries has really focused on presenting compelling villains centered around strong acting performances. It’s such an obvious fit, in fact, that I called it last week when we heard that he was going to be working on a game when I said:

“I somewhat think he’d be perfect to play a Far Cry villain, especially since the series has focussed so heavily on having compelling villain performances in recent entries. It would also be a nice nod to his show mate Michael Mando, who played the fantastic villain Vaas in Far Cry 3 before going on to star in Better Call Saul.”

We’ll no doubt get the official unveiling during Ubisoft’s live stream event they have planned for this weekend, along with perhaps a first look at gameplay. We do have a few interesting details as mentioned in this store listing though.

Playstation owners will perhaps be pleased to hear that at least for digital copies, you can buy Far Cry 6 once, and get access to either the PS4 version or the dedicated PS5 version, depending on which system you’re using. It’s like that similar will apply to the Xbox version, and it’s not particularly a relevant concern on PC, since you never really have to pay extra to get options like increased resolution or performance.

As per this store listing, we’re looking at a February 18, 2021 release date, so it’s quite some time off for now. Obviously release dates can change for a variety of factors, but usually, once pre-orders are available on the Playstation store like this, the date has been mostly locked in. It’s unlikely to just be a placeholder date.

The game takes place in Yara, a “Tropical Paradise, frozen in time”. Here’s the premise:

“Anton Castillo is intent on restoring his nation back to its former glory by any means, with his son, Diego, following in his bloody footsteps. Their ruthless oppression has ignited a revolution”

Sounds like a very similar premise to several of the prior Far Cry games, but hopefully they’ll find a way to put a new spin on it.

Ubisoft are having quite a bit of trouble with leaks these days since there’s also been footage of the new Assassin’s Creed leaking. Not long left to go until this news gets its proper official unveiling at Ubisoft Forward, I wonder if anything else will leak in the meantime?
