Diablo IV will see you battle demon hordes, explore its open world, and try your best to take down Lilith. The latest Diablo game from Blizzard is available on consoles and PC and you can even team up with players through cross-play. However, this may leave many players wondering if they need to be online in order to play Diablo 4.
If you’re one of the many fans picking up the fourth game in the series at launch, here’s the answer to is Diablo 4 online only.
Does Diablo IV feature online-only play?
Yes, you will need a constant internet connection in order to play Diablo IV. Blizzard has yet to confirm if the game will even include an offline mode, so for the time being, you’ll need internet access to enjoy the fourth game. The reason being, is the developers want to provide a better multiplayer experience for everyone. Having the game online only means they can update the game as needed to fix problems or buff and nerf items and bosses as required.
With Diablo 4 being online only, this goes for whatever system or console versions you’re playing on as well. Whether it be PlayStation, Xbox Series X|S, or PC, you’ll only be able to access the servers with if you’re connected through the internet. Plus, it’s required if you want to cross-play with other consoles.
As the world is constantly populated by other players via multiplayer, online is simply part of the game. Although, you by no means have to play with other players to complete the story. You are free to play through the entire main campaign solo. The multiplayer gameplay mechanic, and coincidentally online-only part, is there for others to form groups to take on more challenging areas of the game. This includes legendary world bosses, more challenging World Tiers, quests, PVP, and expansive dungeon crawls.
Even the original Diablo included an online multiplayer mode, although you could still play the main game without consistent internet access. Diablo IV features both multiplayer and single-player action as well, both of which you’ll need to meet the always online requirements to play.
As always, you can check the game’s system requirements to see what is required in order to play the game.
